I have just sold my GT libero and am in need of more power!I always liked libero's but because I've heard it takes a lot to get a 4G93 to handle a decent amount of power I am now in the market for an evo. With the money I have now the options I have are as above. I like the OG look of the earlier evos but am I going to be able to get the power from them that i could from an evo 4.I'd have to say from talking to evo enthusiast's that evo 4's are the least popular of them all.is there any reason apart from the weight difference for this? Also does the evo 1 have a vr4 block because i've also heard that the vr4 block, rods and pistons are solid as f*ck and can handle some big power.Anyway....what I'm really saying is that I'm looking for an evo for track days, quarter mile runs, car shows etc and am in it for the long haul and prepared to put in some serious cash over time. Need opinions, evo 1,2 or 4?

They all have similar potential.

Stock I would go the 2.
Built all of the above are fine... upgrade options are very similar.

No the VR4 blocks are only in VR4s, the EVO funnily enough use EVO blocks :D

The EVO4 was the least popular due to the plain look of them (I love the Evo4 bonnets though), everyone would rather get the wide body look from the 5 and 6, also not many people likes the Evo 4 red tartan interior, they also didn't come with the Brembo brakes like the Evo 5+ did

Me personally I would choose a 2 out of all of them, or throw some extra $$ in and get a 5 or a 6

evo 4 was rather unpopular due to a few mechanical issues. being the first of the evo's with an ayc rear diff they can have issues and are fkn expensive to repair or replace.
the 4g63 in the 4 is commonly known to suffer from crankwalk. i can tell you ive seen quite a few of these in nz do it especially with heavy duty clutches installed.
as stated above ths evo4 has the same brakes as an evo 3 and carries more weight. the 5 and 6 are much better cars imo and with the wide guards etc hav an increased footprint and more room to fit wider boots for track work etc.
i prefer the look of the early evos as well as you and they are not very common anymore. if i was buying one to do trackwork id definitely buy a 6 or a 5 as both factory and aftermarket parts are alot easier to find and youll be starting with a more capable package. if you like old school and love the older evos too much then go for itjust remember they are now 20yr old

If you're prepared to spend the money, then definitely the evo 2. They are lightweight, there's plenty of knowledge around on how to mod them and now you are lucky to have some prime examples of old skool evos eg DOUGMO's, Norris design evo 3 and others. Also since you're in NZ you have the benefit of Racefab who make awesome sh!t. I myself have an evo 1 that i'm currently preparing for enduro events with Racefab stuff, and it already is somewhat "no expense spared" within my limitations of course.

Keep in mind my suggestion could be slightly biased! :)

Given the price of 6s these days (ie $15k or less for a high mileage one), you'd be nuts not to get a 6. Having raced both an E1GSR and E6RS (with Brembos), there is night and day between the two. The wider track, bigger tyre and brembos make a big difference. I know you can do all that to an early car, but why not just buy a car with all that already on it! The other advantage is that 6s are newer so its easier to get parts, especially second hand items if you're on a budget.
