Ok as the topic says...

In comparing a RS to a GSR...

What I was wanting to know is there any way of telling between these 2 models of EVO's apart from the obvious features on them, if you were to have the complete cars side by side to compare...

Eg: RS has no electric windows, no climate control, no recaro seats, no reflectors / foglamps on boot garnish and the door handles / mirrors are black only......

GSR has all of the above but with color coded handles /mirrors and with relectors or foglamps on boot garnish....

Now if I was I just looking at a front cut, the only give away is the heater controls on the dash I guess.....

Can any body tell me if the ID plate on the firewall would have a different codes on it for the different transmissions offered in both the RS and GSR..... Eg: Mechanical LSD to Viscous LSD and standard box...

Also is the ECU a different part no between the RS and GSR ???

For an example lets just say a EVO II / CE9A........

Any info would be good, so throw some my way....

Cheers PPL's

rs models have a different chassis number: ce9a-sndf, whereas gsr's have ce9a-sngf.. and from what i've been told, they have shorter gear ratios, front & rear mechanical lsd, chipped ecu's and lighter panels/glass. the dash should be gl spec (no adjustable intermittent wipers, no fog light button, no electric folding mirrors, etc).. mine has a 240km/h speedo and no centre console lid if that helps.

Thanks NK, yep the chassis no. would be the best way to ID both.... :)

The only thing you hope for, is that the motor and box haven't been changed in its life at some stage if you were wanting to buy a RS package

Not sure where this info is coming from but

- They do not have lighter panels etc
- LSD's are not factory in the front, even for the RS. It was an option for both viscous and mechanical, although towards the end, they seem to have been fitted i guess depending on what stock they had lying around.
- If it has a 240km/h speedo, its certainly not factory fitted.
- The ecu is not chipped. The performance difference is from weight alone.
- Evo 3 RS, and GSR have identical gear ratios's, although there was a short ratio option
- Basically the main differences are with the luxury items, Recaro's, Power Windows, Central Locking, Climate Control, painted items such as mirrors, door handles, aerial is on the door as per lancer gsr and not the rear, no rear wiper, steel wheels, no recaro's, no momo gear etc etc

A couple of corrections.

- ALL Evo I-III front LSDs are viscous. As you say the front LSDs were optional even on the RS's
- Rear LSDs on Evo II/IIIs were all plate type regardless of RS/GSR. Evo I RSs also had the mechanical/plate rear diff. The Evo I GSR had a viscous rear.

WQFE: RS with front LSD

Evo II

I'll dig up the original documention, but a front mechanical LSD was also an option. I believe it may have only been during the evo 3 run, will have to check.

I'll have a chat to my mate. Hes got copies of the original homologation papers for the Evo I-IIIs.

I'm 98% sure that all Mitsi Evo I-III front LSDs were viscous.

Yeah I have them stored away at home somewhere too. There was an extra option for mechanical in the eiii range, I just cant recall if it was mitsi or a ralliart option. Either way, it was able to be ordered pre car purchase.

I were just about to ask this same question!

Ok so what do you guys make of this car then?

http://www.prestigemotorsport.com.au/dealerstock.php?carID=10015

They are calling it a evo 2 RS but its a 93 model with CD9 comp plate???

Looking to bring in a evo or 2. Would prefer an RS with front & rear lsd for myself and maybe a gsr to wreck out.

thats an EVO 1 for sure.....

Here's a 3 RS

trev, that says it has power windows, and ac but with standard heater controls,

but has no rear wiper, black mirrors & handles and front aerial, no boot reflectors

Hey Trev, wheres does it say EVO II RS in the add??? I only can see Lancer RS EVO....

Looks to be a EVO I RS with a EVO II front lip and rear spoiler, dont make any sense having power windows and A/Con being a RS though :?:

Whats the go with this RS also Dre, its got power windows and climate control???

I think even if you bought a RS you could still option it with GSR extras...

My EVO I RS front cut dash had the climate control and the electrics mirrors switch in it too.... but the wipers stalk didnt have the intermittent feature...

yeah that is wierd, perhaps they have the pics mixed up.....?

I always thought that RS's always had aircon, just not climate control.

certainly no power windows

You may be remembering something from the Group A stuff they list in the Homologation papers. (and some of that stuff is   )

I'm still 98% sure that the factory Group N homologations and the road cars sold to the public had viscous front LSDs

Yeah, you could be right actually. Been some time since I looked at it all. Pretty certain all of the homologation parts, were available direct from the dealers at the time though, I actually had a full parts list with prices, will have to do some digging and find it all.
