At $2,000, that is a glamorous accessory! Might be the remedy to the cancer (rust) lancer's are renown for and save a little weight in the process... :p

it would save fuck all weight.. maybe 2kg? a roofskin isnt that heavy!!!

Jon

You could be right, but a 2kg weight saving to some people could be the same as 0.01 of a second saving is in formula 1. Got the picture!? The price is exorbitant for a miniscule weight saving but as it was previously mentioned, the BMW M6 and M3 have carbon roofs, so it must be of some benefit...

Its for sales 8)

To a degree. The M3 CSL was always marketed as a lightweight racer. But, even taking a couple of kgs out of the roof will have quite an effect on shifting the centre of gravity lower.

SADLY, to me CF has become a ricers mod. People fit it to get the race cred/look without ever getting within kms of the track. Ruins it for me.

4,5 kilograms are saved from the roof by using carbon fibre. Therefore the M6 cannot be ordered with a sunroof. Carbon-fiber reinforced plastics has a density of 1,5 kg / dm^3 as opposed to 2,7 kg / dm^3 for aluminum. Acheveing these weight savings results in faster speeds in bends and further reduction of body dive and roll since the center of gravity is lowered significantly

Better than a punch in the nuts i'd say... :p

just make a mould of your roof and make your own 8)

price of fiberglass for mould: $150
price for cf $300
price of vacuum pump hire+accessories for infusion: $200

knowing someone payed $2g+ for it, fkn priceless!

Thats true

when i use to work making custom bodykits for a company the price they sold kits for was huge and it was all so cheap to make even more so as they paid in bulkd i have been thinking about getting into the carbon fiber side of things just goto get more knowledge and some testing i guess

anyone have a stock evo 6 guard? or what is the going rate for a CC guard? maybe i should try and make that 1st

Well i have looked into it and it seems close to the same process as fiberglass just with some lil diff

im not going to start off with a guard im going to start off with somthing small so now i just goto wait for my car to come back grab a part off it and start having a play around with it

Its aligning the fibres up to get a good grid pattern without creases that makes cf a lot harder than fibreglass. Well that and its more expensive obviously.

There are is just a matter of finding the product sellers details as there are molds out there and pics to back it up just no infomation on who is selling them

One of the prototype fabrication guys from work who also does $$$ from home has offered to make me up whatever I've wanted in CF provided I supply the raw material, so I've been in touch with a place in Melb that sells it.

200gsm carbon fibre at the moment is selling for about $100/sq meter, then you've got the gel coat cost on top of that. How many sq/m is a roof? Then how many layers would you need?

He made up an entire VE front end (guards, bonnet and bumper) from CF as part of a mass-reduction exercise one of the groups is doing at work. It looked fk'n HAWT and I mean HAWT!! The base car was a black SS-V and with the CF front end it just looked unbelievable. Then they went and painted it

Nupol composites (Moorabin) sell general purpose cf for $50/m^2 ; and epoxy resin sells for approx $60-80 per 4L & $30 for catalyst to suit.. ive done abit of research into making carbonfibre parts too 8).

you would need about 3layers of carbon, vacuum sealed and infused, and preferably baked for extra rigidity/strength properties.

Cool - sounds like you've found a cheaper place to buy your stuff from than me.

I'm sure if you decide to turn your hand from fibre-glass to CF then you'll certainly have a market for what you make, given the apparent interest in this thread!
