Hey Guys, Need some help getting my Evo 3 Engine out,
The Story So Far:
I have my engine all chained up to the Engine crane. I've undone all the bolts (that I can see) connecting the block to the bell-housing and the passenger side engine mount but for some reason the engine won't completely seperate ??
Am I missing something? It seems to be stuck more around the area directly underneath where the starter motor would sit??
Is there a bolt near where the square-drive is?

So what you saying is that you trying to take the engine out whilst leaving the gearbox and transfer case in the car?

I think you will find it difficult and it would be easier to remove the whole engine and gearbox. Infact I am not even sure you can do it.

Even with my engine out I struggled to seperate the gearbox and engine. To get them apart you will probably have to move it up to 15 cm.

You will need to take the tranfer case off at least. .....there is a bolt that a few people forget to remove...it is below the starter and goes through the block dowel.

there is a 12mm headed bolt up above the l/h drive shaft below the stater motor have u got that one?

Hypo i have pulled the engine out of my 1.8 stock coupe and left the box in but it is auto...

Its easy as to remove with our without box. I left my box on when I did the swap and had it bolted to engine when putting the engine back in.....

Have a look in the Tech Section, theres a sticky in there somewhere, which covers this exact topic.

Just make sure you have all 4 mounts unbolted and wiring unplugged then its a piece of piss!!

Better still have a read of this.........

Leave the box on, less hassle  Lift the engine up at an angle by using the pivot point of the chain about 2/3 the way on the timing belt side of the cam cover B)
This raises the timing belt side of the engine higher than the back of the gearbox and is much easier to remove and re-install.
PS: Have you completely removed the starter motor? lol

Agreed. Drain gear oil. Remover drive shafts. Lift the whole lot out. Alot quicker and less fiddling.

Ok I've looked at all the suggested locations for bolts and moving the hook along chain to get different angles and none of them seem to work.
there still seems to be something stopping it from moving. It seems to be around the four to five o'çlock position on the fly-wheel (looking from the cam belt end).
The only thing I can think of is that because the crank bearings have failed the whole crank, fly-wheel and clutch has dropped and is caught on the bell housing. (?)
Here are some photos any way:

Not the best quality but they work :)

From those pics u will have to remove the gear box. Where it's sitting on the crossmember u can't get the engine on a good enough angle. Plus the flywheel and clutch are too wide to move the engine far right and up. It won't clear bell housing. U will have to undo gear box mounts and shift it left. But then u might as well take the box out with blOck if ur undoing it.

Are u saying u can't seperate block and gearbox. There should be 5 bolts. 2 for starter motor. 2 along top of box. And one above front mount. Then gently pry it apart

Get under the damn thing and have a look lol. Tell me you removed the rear crossmember bolt at least lol.
Its probably the bolt that holds the transfer case on or a locating lug that positions the bellhousing to the block.
It also looks like your shifter cables are still attached to the top of the gearbox :p Have you also undone the 2 small bolts underneath that hold the slave cylinder inplace? Last of all, play with the shifter linkage to put the gearbox in neutral before remvoing.

From the pics I saw the cables still attached. And that cross member is still attached. So gearbox is still in place. Hence u won't be able to het the block out. If ur gonna undo crossmember and everything else u might aswell do the whole lot. At least then u can get it all clean. Engine and engine

From what I can see in the second last photo the Box is still attatched to the mount and x member
Removing these will go a long way to helping you get it out IMO.
Take that x member out mounts and all and the box should fall out basically if everything is undone....
