EVO II Gearbox Concerns 5th Gear

Hi I was wondering if anyone would know why 5 gear is grinding when I change from 4th to 5 th Gear.

Clutch is ok, all other gears are fine. Going back from 5th to 4th or 3rd is fine.

Would gearbox oil make a difference?

Syncros mate..... my EVO gearbox did it too, then i replaced the sincros now runs smooth

How on earth do you guys wreck the synchro on 5th?

when would you be rapidly changing into that gear?

I think from memory that 5th gear has something to do with the reverse gear as well. Im not gearbox minded that much lol

i dunno.. the only way for it not to crunch was for me to double clutch

Mine was de-glazed by removing the end cover, cleaning up the 5th gear syncro, then recovering. It was done by Brett @ Meek. Wasn't expensive, and my box has been perfect ever since, which would be 18months minimum, Including many trackdays.

Scotty i am having to double clutch it from 4th to 5 th to stop the crunching.

I dunno how much mine cost

I got a mate who owns a gearbox place to rebuild it for me with new close-ratio gears, 2nd/3rd/4th double-cone synchros, final drive of 5.358:1

But i got it done at mates rates

Remove the end cover from the box. Remove the big fuck off nut, remove the 5th gear synchro hub and give it a light sandblast. Check the teeth on the synchro ring and if all good, put it back together again. Don't even have to remove the box from the car to do it. Sounds easy don't it!

My guess a worn 5th gear synchro would have been caused by some yob that likes to rest their hand on the gear lever while cruising, or incorrectly adjusted gear linkages, either of those will put slight pressure on the synchros.

I you want contacts for a gearbox guy in Brissy, ask Brisvr4 and MDK87 for the contact of the guy that did their boxes.

they reckon it mite cost me around 1300 bucks to get this all done..
that was at re customs.. its there at the moment..
