I'm due for a clutch and seeing as my car is 20yo started thinking it might be time to refresh the gearbox internals. Unfortunately its been suggested that early evo gearbox parts are so hard to get that its cheaper to buy a new gearbox/transfer case from Mitsubishi ($4k)! Supposedly DSM/VR4 parts aren't the best match to early evo parts.

That got me thinking. Could you just swap out the entire gear cluster and replace it with a strengthened DSM set from the US? That seems to be about $1500 according to a site like Jacks transmissions.

Viable alternative?

The input and inter shaft bearings wear the most. Check your preload on these shafts to give you a idea how worn they are. Replace them if stuffed. Chuck a couple of synchro rings in if needed as well and a set of seals. Easy...

I did wonder about some drop in clusters as well though.
I also think you could put them in without pulling the gearbox. Not a issue for you I know but I think it could be done

Early EVO gearbox internals arent really that hard to get at the moment, you just need to get the right part numbers and order them through Mitsubishi or a gearbox specialist.
Problem is, they are expensive!! If you know whats shit in your gearbox, then just replace what you need.
You also have to be careful what you try to mix and match with DSM, VR4, GSR, RVR and EVO I, EVO II, EVO III gearboxes because not everything is interchangeable and you could kill the box or find out it wont shift and mesh well until its too late and it fails. Im not just talking about the clusters, there's also hib sizes, shift rails, shift forks, reverse idler arms, centre diffs, crownwheel/output pinion and others that arent interchangeable.
You could try to see what sort of deal the US boys will give you if you dont supply a gearbox in exchange for a built one, also see how much freight is to Australia + GST + Tariffs and other taxes. Would be good to know for members in future.
But 'dropping in clusters' and 'changing shafts' when the bellhousing is still mounted horizontally on the engine block rolls off the toungue easy but it would be extremely frustrating and difficult to by one person without the risk of things falling off or just not sitting right for assembly, playing around with keeping things straight, holding them in place etc. It'll be something I'd pay $100 for a ticket to watch, plus sit down to eat popcorn to heckle at lol ;)
Best thing to do is find yourself a gearbox specialist who knows EVO boxes and get them to rebuild it. In Sydney you have 3 names that come to mind immediately... Meek, Vince Rigoli and MRT. You could even try Carlos at Sportsclassic if he's still around?

Cheers guys.

Just trying to think outside the box (so to speak!) as certain information round the forums seems to suggest that the parts don't mix well. It seems like you can get the whole cluster (ie internals) from jacks/TMZ/other places for ~US$1500.

Carlos! I remember going to his place in whoop whoop years ago when I had my 240Z. Not sure what he does these days.

there's a guy in N.Z that i got to freshen up a box for me, he also Does alot of boxes for the guys down the strips, i just got seals bearings and anything that looked poo fixed, so just got a Std gsr box but all up delivered to my door was well under $1200 and he fixes the docket so ya avoid customs tariff's etc
He also said he can make a box to suit, strengthened input shaft or something double synchro gears etc would be a little more but i thought it was a very fair price,
let me know if ya want me sus it out further

i could definantly use a known good gsr box w5m33 code i don't think the one i have is all that healthy still work like a treat no grinding just keeps releasing reverse if you don't hold the shifter in gear

just had a chat with my mate from N.Z for anyone who is interested, its about 1200-1300 aud for either a gsr or Evo box, no trading in ya old box req, so if anyone wants his number shoot me a pm!

thats landed bro, and if ya quick he has a gsr box with the lsd in it, rare as and you will require a different c/v cup but mean score, think that 1 was 1400 landed,

I will take you up on this.
Input and inter fully removed then refit and measured for shims and replaced. Without removing gearbox, through the end plate. You put on $200 ($100 ticket each.. no one rides for free) of piss and supply own f¤♡king popcorn. I rnr clusters through the end plate and keep whatever piss is left when I finish that u havent drunk.
:-D
I bet that is how the rally guys used to change ratios between stages back in the day. They could probably do it in 20 min...

I'll put my $100 up to pay and join the crowd to watch this "do it in the car bizzo without removing the bell housing" LOL ...and its tricky enough to assemble on the bench !! Considering its only another 30 mins or so to remove the box from the engine, I know how I would do it
