I need advice. In the past 3 weeks I have managed to kill 2 stock coil packs and now 2 coils on a cop kit.
Each time it has happened was directly after I've given the car a bootful then all of a sudden bang, cough, splutter.
Sounds like its running on 2 cylinders, revs drop down to around 300rpm, afr go off the scale lean.
I tested the coils by pulling the leads off the plugs to determine which one is bad.
Every now and then it seems like the car corrects its self for a second and then back to being bad again.
This has only happened since it was tuned. They only thing to be changed then was spark plugs to bpr8es and running on e85.
I'm still running the same boost 20-21psi as before it went in to get tuned.
Have also made a patch loom up to run a evo 7 ecu. Could a loose wire also be the issue.
Can the plugs cause the coil packs to fail? Or should I be looking elsewhere?

If its tune related...as in...started after being tuned....why not take it back to the tuner and let him sort it out?
What car is this on also?

Did you check Power Transitor Unit...I believe it gives the coil packs the power to ignite and relays info to the ECU.
Also, have you ever changed your O2 sensor to stock? I read somewhere it can cause the failure.

This is a good info. Many people blames lack of earthing.

boost leak test, wires, plugs packs and ptu's and an 02. that will kill your problem. if the coil fires and has nowhere to go it releases its dwell( charge) wherever it can. usually inside it self and can cause a pack to burst or explode. this can be cause by faulty wires, shorted plugs. or even a faulty ground. if one of the wires is open it can cause this effect after some time. ohm out you wires. they should be under 10k for the entire length if they are good and also good quality 20k is for resistor wires.
another easy way to find a secondary ignition short is with a water spray bottle at night. lightly mist/ spray your wires in the dark while the engine is running. if there is a problem you will see a lightning storm.

97 rvr hypergear.
Tuner is busy right now. At this point I'm just trying to rule out other possibilities before I can confirm it has something to do with the tune, the timing of all of this could be just a coincidence.
As for the o2, I did change it back to stock, but only after the first lot of coil packs died.
I did check my patch loom that I made up for the e7 ecu connection. 2 wires were loose (injector 2 & vref 5w) also noticed that the wire for ign amp 1 has 2 joins in the wire. Could be a break in the wire? I can confirm now that every time the coil packs have "died" it has been both cylinder 2 & 3, and its my understanding that both of which are controlled by ign amp 1.
Also told swapping out the igniter for e7 igniter might help. Don't currently have a e7 igniter, but I do have a spare rvr one. Is there a way you can test the igniter? And can you test coil packs off car?

I had an intermittent problem something like this.
I would get an EM light and after I stopped the motor it wouldn't start again.
Very scary noises and sounded like ignition was firing way too early and pushing the piston backwards.
Local mech (supposedly) changed a coil pack but the problem recurred.
After ECU tested twice with no fault found and all wiring checked and ecu pins tensioned replaced crank sensor and fault recurred about 2 weeks later
Replaced cam sensor and after one hiccup car has not failed since (about 2 years now)
Was probably a timing problem brought on by a failing cam position sensor?

Found the problem, or so it seems.
Igniters.
Replace the igniters & it was all good, even started better.
I'm wondering now, do I replace these igniters with Evo 7 igniters? Because of the Evo 7 ecu.
