Hi guys I'm looking at some major driveline upgrades wondering if anyone on here has done any of the following and if you have any pros/ cons or alternative products to recommend.

First of I'm looking at a ppg dog box but i am still undecided on 1st to 4th or getting th 5th gear option. Im choosing ppg over par as it seems par are no where near as reliable as ppg and i have owned a ppg box in a wrx which was a very well buil transmissionon easy to drive and never had any issue.

Second sheptrans transfer case upgrade. Heard good things from a couple of drag racing evo owners they seem to be the number 1 choice from everyone ive talked to. Has anyone used another brand?

Last of all is thedriveshaftshop.com front and rear drive shafts I havent really heard much about these but they seem to be supplying some serious hp cars. Again i ask has anyone used them or ancompany'smpanys shafts?

Your feedback appreciated im looking at having to spend some big dollars and i only want to spend it once if possible instead of a trial and error adventure.

Thanks Daniel

I dont think shep do the xfer anymore unless he has a new supplier. I wanted one about 3 months ago and he said they were in search for a new manufactured. Par was the other choice. Im running a par dog box and it is fine. Easy to drive, likes flat shifts and have run a 136mph in 4th approx 7000rpm. As for driveshafts from dss, let me know when you purchase coz I want some stuff too.

Would you consider going auto?
No auto mate still wat to stay with the manual

Shep got back to me today and they are no longer doing them they said they will be doing them again in months to come.
So bazeng did you end up getting a par transfer case? How much were you quoted?

So PAR xfer case upgrade:

RRP $1815 inc GST + machining of extension housing
GB Price $1452 inc GST + machining of extension housing

We need to purchase about 4 plus units to get the discount.

Let me know if your keen and we can get things rolling.
So far it is about 1-2 months turnaround time.

They will need a good condition core to work on also.

I'm interested in the ALLOY DSS 3" shaft with a powerglide yoke.

I'm down for a group buy!
Otherwise, we can get local ones made for about the same price but it will be in steel.

Im in. Do they do a bigger tailshaft yoke like shep? Have you got any info on what they do to the transfer case?
Im after dss front and rear axels is there anyone in Australia that does a simular package and of same quality as dss?

86psi Im sticking to ppg dog box if your interested in one as well ill see what they can do for 2.

i am defiantly interested in a dogbox and an upgraded transfer case. are you guys looking into just the gearsets for the gearboxes or supply a casing get the gearset installation included?

Baz, does the PAR transfer case upgrade require a different output shaft from the gearbox? what style transfer case do they need as a core change (alloy vs steel, 22/23 spline)

I was looking at getting a gearset installed as well ive got a evo 3 gearbox here ready to go. Ppg a couple of months ago quoted me $7- 800 for install plus new bearings but as of last week when i spoke to them they are apparently that busy with manufacting they are sending them to another shop to get installed not sure if that means the price will go up or not.

I checked out the stuff on trade me those front axels are $650 brand new from states he wants $1000 second hand. I asked him about box its done 30-40 passes id say it would need a refresh from looking on you tube its had a hard life.

So when are we kicking off the transfer cases?

we run a pfitzner 1st-4th dog gearset, its a pretty good bit of kit, there is nothing like a dog box for competition use!

From memory the gearset is $6600+ GST and that gets you input and output shafts,1st - 4th gears plus the matching dog-rings plus a centre diff body or if you want a locked centre a centre spool that locks the shafts togeather. It also comes with a custom selector fork for 3-4th but uses the standard 1st -2nd selector fork, along with all the other standard gearbox components.

The 5th gear option is i think around $1500+ gst, tho we just have a vr4 5th gear in the rally car as the ratio is alot better than the evo 3 5th and we dont really need the dog selection for 5th.

Make sure you factor in the cost of replacement dog rings and dog gears as if you use the gearset without the clutch it does wear quite quickly. I always use the clutch as it really doesnt cost any time, but for drag applications it probbaly would make a difference. You will also need a new clutch or at least replacing the clutch centre, as the input shaft has the larget spline that is the same size as evo 6 onwards. You also need to get the gearbox case milled out where the shaft come out into the bell housing.

The straightcut gears are great, but if you were going to use it for daily driving i think it would get old pretty quick, might not be so bad in a car still with carpet and sound deadening.

Personally I would go for an Albins gearset if i had my time over, there is a much bigger choice of ratios than PPG have (however the PPG ratios are good for drag applications), plus the dog teeth are splined onto the dog gears so they can be pressed off and replaced without having to replace the dog gears, meaning servicng is much cheaper. I dont think any other gearset has the shift feel of PPG however.

cheers
Lewis
