Im trying to narrow down my unsmooth gear changes, I've noticed that i have a fair amount of firewall flex around the master cylinder when the clutch is in. I dont think theres any cracks or anything though. The question is should there be any firewall flex i.e. should the firewall be completly still when pushing in the clutch?

common problem mate, in some cases the wall splits!!! Best thing to do is get some re-enforcing around it so it is pushing down on a larger surface area. :D

Yeah i've read all the other posts.

So the answer is there should be no flex at all?

Who can do the re-inforcing in perth, Tenagah?

Hey George - is your reinforcement plate on the inside or outside of the firewall? I saw your pics in your Members Ride thread - but the plate you show a pic of seems smaller than what you've just shown in the above pic.

I did a similar thing. Just cut out the same section of the firewall from another evo, and used it to reinforce it.
Also, as later down the track i will aswell, there are cusco braces you can buy to reinforce the area.

The car you have, I have seen and worked on, just days before you bought it. I told him then there is something wrong with the clutch..You and I may have at one stage talked of this before.

the clutch in that car doesnt fully disengage when depressed.

to check this ......car idling in neutral and stationary. depress clutch
watching tacho. select first gear.....you will feel more resistance than normal as it engages and the the revs will drop. try another car yes the revs will drop a bit but not like yours.

I think either pivot ball and fork are worn

this could be contributing to a notchy gear change feel

I agree with your theory, and i rang Ross at auto clutch about it. He said due to the cost of accessing the clutch (around 500 bux) i better make sure that this is definately the problem.

So the idea is i'm trying to narrow down the problem, if the firewall flex maybe causing the problem and will be causing problems in the future it makes sense to fix this first and then look at the clutch if it doesnt resolve the problem.

I dont think the russian guy did a clutch however maybe you could talk to the guy that owned it before him and see if he did...do you still have a contact number......
I am happy to give you a hand but as you know Im south of the river. let me know ....there maybe something that can be easy fixed
