RE: EBay Auction: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320199352868

Its some V8 guy's first time on EBay and selling a Haltech E11v2 at $1 no reserve. All I asked him was whether he would consider an alternate arrangement for payment/pickup i.e. instead of bank deposit would he consider COD or Cash pick up from him in Canberra next week during the Summernats because its his first time on EBay and selling an item worth $2000 for $1 No Reserve and that its a big ticket item and I dont want to take the risk.

His response to me was "so every new e-bayer comes under suspicion...? if you think its going to be a painfull transaction don't bid!!!!" .

I thought I asked a perfectly normal question and what I got back was a rude, abrupt and non helpful response from a typical V8 yobbo  I can tell he's gonna last long on EBay

Anyone else want to ask him a question to see what kind of response he gives?

Question sent ... I have a friend in the ACT too ... So I can always ask if he lives close to this guy and see if the address is legit ...

sounds a bit sus,

maybe ask him if he will meet you somewhere else.

maybe he doesnt want people coming to his house?

if he agrees it may be ok, if not seems very sus

Yeah...NEVER ask them to come over to your house or meet them at theirs.....Meet in a public place IE carpark at a big shopping centre or inside....

I just had the excact same thing happen to me.

I contacted the guy selling these wire wheels and asked him if local pickup was ok. He said yes, so I bid on them and won.

Then, the guy wanted me to pay for them before I picked them up! He rekons it says in the auction that I had to pay for them first, before I picked them up!! I said he sounds like a scam artist, and refused to do that, and only offered to pay on pickup

This transaction IS NOT going through!!!

I dont see what the big deal is with people not wanting to get paid on pick up. I mean, you have got to physically be there to get the item anyway so why not hand over the $$ at the same time - easy!

If they pay before hand then theres no "come on mate, I have cash" issues after.. also no "can I come look at your R32"... if the buyer pays before hand you know it's legitimate and they're not coming around with a group of friends to "pick up" the item.

Anyway, if you pay via paypal and don't receive the item, you can simply request a refund from paypal. I only think it's dodgy if the seller DOESN"T accept paypal...

Yeah but he's a first time EBayer, thats the problem. If he had some sort of history then that'll be cool and no problem at all paying first. I suppose it all comes down to risk and whether you want to risk that sort of money.

The bloke is selling that to.

If a person on ebay has a 0 feedback well so what, you have to start from somewhere, everybody at one stage when first signing up had zero feedback.

Plus why would he risk going to jail or have a criminal record for only the odd $800 bucks or so on ebay, like i dont think he is that stupid.

When ever there is something very expenisive in value starting at $1 reserve it will never stay low, it will usually go skyrocketing at the end. as you can see its at the 300 mark.

if your interested, just say i will only pay you in person, if he refuses, well stuff it, look elsewhere.

This is the reply I got

sorry bud but i'm going to be flat out trying to get my other car ready for the nats,so pick up is not ok

I would really think that it would be more of a hassle to send something by post and wait for my cash then COD ????

they shoudnt be aloud to sell till atleast 5 feedback

Im the same I will only buy it local if low score otherwise your asking to be riped off

OK, I sent him an email outside of EBay. This time I asked:

"Hi again. No seriously, I'm genuinely interested in the ECU and placing a bid. I dont mean to be suspiscious and apologise if my question offended you but I only wanted to know if payment and pick up was available because of the value of the ECU. Its a lot of money for someone to lose and its a risk to a first time seller on EBay. Surely you could understand why people would find it a little daunting to buy from a first time seller and then deposit a large sum of money into their account. If I may ask, can you please reconsider pick up, COD or PAYPAL? Ebay doesnt offer any security on the item you are selling so its a gamble for a buyer. Please try to understand it from a buyers point of view."

It's worth a try, if he's desperate to sell it before Summernats to help fund his car then wouldnt he be jumping through hoops to accommodate a buyer? He's probably sick of people asking him over and over again by now  If he avoids contact or diagrees to any of the other payment options then stuff it - I'm not taking the risk. There's been plenty of warning about first time sellers selling multiple items at once especially if they are worth a fair bit.

Good luck ...

You would think though, that a sale is a sale, and a normal seller would be prepared to at least meet the buyer half way in terms ...

I bought a set of Recaro's off ebay once.. It was from a guy in WA, and he had no feedback.. I was new to Ebay also and had no feedback but went ahead with the buy... It was 2.5K that I deposited into his bank account, and luckily, the goods came through ...

But .... When I put them in the car, and went to get them engineered (about 18 months later), I found out they were fakes .... Grrrrrrrrr ..... The guy was long gone by then, and not an ebay user .... They were good looking fakes though ... Even my mechanic and all my friends thought they were real ...

I dont understand why you didnt go further and sue that rip off artist. the police would've done their services to locate him via his bank account details.

$2500 is a bloody big amount, yiou would win the court battle anyday, as you said the seats were fully fake.

I was ripped of of $300 on ebay once via western union, but thats $300 bucks, 300 isnt worth the hassle, but 2500, thats a diffrent story.

Probably because he might win but even if he did the result usually goes something like this... " I don't have any money, al I can afford to pay is $5 per week". And you would be lucky to see the first payment!

As for you being ripped off on Ebay by Western Union... did you not read the notice that is on every Ebay auction page?
eBay prohibits the use of instant cash transfer services such as Western Union or Moneygram.

Because people can set up fake EBay accounts using fake credit cards, accounts and identities so you've got buckleys chance of tracking them down. Scam artists will even sell lots of small dollar items to gain a good 100% feedback and gain people's trust and see if they can get away with it, then move onto selling numerous big $$ items at once and then run away with the money  It happens! Anyhow, I think I've lined up another ECU in the meantime :D
