flash floods... in summer?

our street in oakleigh was just over waist deep, we had a loan car (shitty old datsun) parked at the end of the street and that was floded right up over the bonnet. the guy next door had his new XR6 ute there aswell, he was inside none the wiser that his car was getting written off.
funny thing is, he took his shoes off, walked/swam in, got in his car and managed to start it and drive it out lol
i was amazed.
our office, toilet and some of the workshop in the panel shop was flooded aswell, had to shut off power and hope for the best
i will try get my boss 2 send me photos, he took heaps for insurance purposes

Out the back of my work....
The van started and drove off after the water had drained away , the beamer was entered via remote windows, and climing thru, however it's door seals let water in as I saw the guy bailing out of the footwells later!
As for my car well my alluminium bonnet got dented up the last hail storm I drove thru so I wasnt keen on having further damage done and parked it inside the workshop but only after the interior had been soaked coz I stupidly forgot I had left the windows down about an inch after coming back from getting lunch when the hot sun was out
there was a bunch of ice rocks (yes seriosly almost the size of golf balls) inside on the seats. It was almost 6pm before I was able to get my car out of the workshop and go home!

I was at phillip island and it didn't rain that hard there!
we had a few radio's go out (e1/transmission stuff) due to the storm, but I didn't think it was that bad!
On the way home, I noticed cars on the side of the road, drains flooded to the top and princes hwy was chockers outbound!...

i was down at blairgowrie beach when it started bucketing down this arvo...
then having dinner in springvale, it started pissing down again!!!
this time, it actually flooded parts of the springy shopping centre roads!!!
then on the way to southland, more flooded roads!
luckily i had the work car which is a big beast and didn't mind getting some water into its intake...
something wierd is going on!
i was down at blairgowrie beach when it started bucketing down this arvo...
then having dinner in springvale, it started pissing down again!!!
this time, it actually flooded parts of the springy shopping centre roads!!!
then on the way to southland, more flooded roads!
luckily i had the work car which is a big beast and didn't mind getting some water into its intake...

Well, at 7pm nunawading/doncaster/donvale got a good soaking for at least 30+ minutes.
First time I've ever had to use my wipers on level 3, well.. as fast as they could go, and I could barely see.
Hehe there were biggggg puddles as well, I wish I wasnt going like 60kmh in front of gary's car audio, I think there was around 5-10cm of water or so (must have been over the gutter anyways), and I couldn't see anything at all thanks to a 4x4 driving fast by my side spashing water all over my windscreen. My wipers still were not fast enough, all I saw was a water slide on my windscreen for a few seconds, 0 visibility. But im not complaining, we need the rain so bad!!
Anywho my tyres seemed to handle great in the wet with around 2cm or more of water on top of the road so I'm wrapped, and I ended up getting that Vacumm cleaner for my mum, the last one too! Lucky ey...
Also, just a quick question, just curious, what happens if your air filter filled with water. Does that mean the car turns off due to not being able to suck in air, or does it suck up the water into the engine causing it to fail/corrode or something? I've just always wondered. Usually there's a pipe running down from the airbox to the front of the car, what if that filled with water or is there a hole in it to let water out or something? What is the reason an airfilter is in a box anyways, is it to keep out water/dirt/leaves?

I think you can get something called hydro lock which is when the paper in your filter gets soaked so no air can get through and then if your unfortunate you can inhale the paper filter which ends up everywhere in your head. This is why some of the higher quality filters have a wire mesh over the filter to stop the paper from ripping out.

Probably a good idea to use them as well at lower speeds though.And I am fucking sick to death of this rain! I was vacuuming away the water as it came into my flat again last night for a good two hours. Ripped up all the carpet and it still smells like a fish tank and now there's mold, so I'm moving out for the time being. :x Worst time of year for it too, insurance companies can't really do anything because there's hardly anyone working at the moment now. So much for global warming huh, raining and fucking cold in December.
