for sale section

Help Support 4GTuner:

Access to the for sale section is allowed when you have both:
a) accumulated 50 posts
b) been a member for greater than 6 months.
Both these rules must be satisfied.

However, this can be bypassed if you become a 'Donating Member' which is on the left hand side.

So in your case Grant you are a month or two off :)

Hey guys can I propose something,
Having recently being ripped by a fellow member (newbie) I think that we should look at the rules a bit and see what everyone else says.
I think it is important that newbies have the opportunity to sell their wares to us after all we are a community and we help each other out with getting rid of stuff that is just sitting in the garage taking up space otherwise most stuff ends up in landfill.
My proposal is as follows:
All posts should have an indicator ; Some kind of color differentiation similar to Wikkipedia,

RED: WARNING do not hand over any money until inspected and confirmed can be put to Yellow if long standing member/mod/admin can confirm legitimacy of Seller

Yellow: Caution, donating member or long time serving member, Can be put to green if long standing member/mod/admin can confirm legitimacy of seller.

Green: reputable seller

I know that it is always buyer beware however sometimes like me I have to purchase something then have to wait till I can organise delivery due to work or commitments elsewhere or something so you count on the community to help out. That is what being part of a community which shares the same interest should be about.

Just putting it out there do you folks think that this is valid? I really think that whilst you said newbies have some restrictions it could be that a long time member may not be legitimate either. As someone has said you only make rules for the stupid if everyone helped each other out and looked after each other then we would not have to worry about it.

Should we poll this??

To be honest I think the system works fine. It has just as many flaws as the colour system above.

We have had long time members that we thought could be trusted, and have traded safely for a long time, then just one day decided that they would scam someone. In this case they would have been tagged with a green anyway, so it wouldn't have saved the user from being scammed.

Then we have newbies who are fully legit and just want to sell their goods. They would be red, when they are probably WAY more legit than the user above.

Everything purchased over the internet has some risk attached to it. Even ebay you can be scammed with and they have every preventative measure under the sun.

If you don't want to take any risk, only ever pay cash when you pick up the item, otherwise take the risk and hope for the best.

For sale

Point taken Jase,

But said member above would then rate a Red from then on until he works their way back.

People would then know to be wary long serving or not?

As for newbies well as you said if they sell and are reputable then they go to the next level. Even Ebay have a rating system that people can check on. Whilst it is corruptible in general it is OK.

Better yet, if anyone has a sniff of being a scammer, we just remove their trading rights until they prove to us that they aren't. :)

In order for us to do this properly though, the users need to tell us if someone has done something wrong so we can try and help them out.

IMO less complicated is better! keep it the way it is, and its a fair call with the '50 posts/6 month' rule, otherwise we'll just get ******s abusing the for-sale thread and using it as a trading post.

maybe have a bad seller list you can check on a sticky
We've thought about this, but realistically they can't sell if we remove their rights anyway.

I forget why we chose not to do it in the end, but there were lengthy discussions about "naming and shaming". It's a tricky situation for us, since we can't control either parties' actions.

For sale

You need to be careful with stuff like "naming and shaming"

You can but just relay the facts and let people make up their mind.

End of the day you can sell something that fails a day after someone installs it and you may never of known. Interesting discussion and some challenges however they can be worked out!

Happy to chat more about this

At the end of the day, no one is going to troll a list of people in a sticky before they buy something.

Also, there's nothing stopping someone joining up, becoming a donating member and ripping someone off- like Jase said you can't trust anyone these days- it's up to you as an individual to be the judge and jury when it comes to internet transactions- and while the mod/admin staff here at T4G don't condone anyone getting ripped off- it's out of our hands when people decide to hand over thousands of dollars without seeing anything in the flesh.

I'd like to think that most if not all of the frequent members on this site are honest in every transaction, so if you are dealing with someone who is new to the club and interstate, feel free to post a thread asking another member to go and check the goods on your behalf. I'm always happy to help others out, and have had plenty of others do the same for me in other states, its just what we do in the community we have going on here.

dre

Yeah I definitely agree with Dre here. Many of us have done favours for eachother in the past.

I got to drive Barry's AMG VR$ before he bought it from Adelaide Jap a few years ago. :)

It would be great if someone could develop a plug in module for forum software, that allowed admins to set up an ebay like seller and buyer reputation scheme.

for sale

I agree with dre as well as I said the onus is on the buyer.
And as you can see I wear the full brunt of the my mistake and I have not blamed or accused anyone here.

I suppose the question here is as a community do we do nothing about it? or do we implement some safety/warning? Lets think for the lowest common denominator on the forum.

At least we are doing the correct thing here and letting the thread take its run and opening up for Ideas.

Does anyone know if this forum can turn this function on in most it usually can with no extra cost.

Well done!

There is no "function". They are all hacks/plugins/etc.

To be honest we aren't a trading website. We are an information website. We help each other with info and as a bonus we trade some stuff in the background.

Regardless of extra cost, there is the factor of time. My time. I don't personally believe that any sort of rating system is going to make any sort of difference. Hundreds, probably thousands of trades have happened as a result of our Marketplace here. Of the three or four scams we have been notified about and given information on, I feel that we've done everything we can for the users that have been hard done by.

I'm happy for options to be discussed but to be honest I think it's something that will never be 100%.
