3rd gear dies because when the broken pieces from the centre diff come out of the side holes, they get caught up in the centre diff gear teeth, whipped around the casing (scraping the fuk out of the inside casing around the centre diff) and then get compressed between the centre diff gear and 3rd gear intermediate. When you have pieces in 3rd gear intermediate it then spins onto 3rd subgear on the input shaft. See blue pics.
