Hey Guys,

I was just wondering what is the best FWD gearbox to use on a 4G61T, Ive got a 4G15 gearbox hooked up to it now but im worried its just gonna fail after afew weeks

Cheers
Danny

The 4g15 gearbox will last you a while, but only if you drive like a granny.

There are a few box's that can be adapted, but In my opinion, Get your hands on a 1.6L GSR box. Beleive me.. It'll cop the punishment. ;)

Next option would be a a VR4 4wd gearbox which is switchable to FWD

Next best option is to track down a KM210 Hyundai sonata box, they're actually the same box in the 4g61t cyborgs.

Each has different gear ratio's. But personal experience with the 61t and 61n/a gearbox, they seem to work beautifully.

i used the KM210 from a sonata/magna. biggest problem with that is flywheels.
in the US you can use a fwd DSM flywheel, but in australia the only thing is the mathcing magna flywheel. reason being, that the KM210 mounts the starter motor 10 mm further out so VR4 f/wheels don't reach the starter. but i suppose if the 1.6 GSR clutch can handle it the magna one should (my car isn't on the road yet)

I would recommend a vr4 box and just convert it to fwd, Ive done this and its very easy job. plus its a strong box so will handle some abuse too

i still say go the km210, if you get it from a hyuandai, get the flywheel from it too!!! easy as that!!
the km210 is very very strong, i have put all sorts off abuse through mine and it loves it!! had upwards of 165kw at the wheels and it takes everything, hard launch, flat changes!! you name it.

dont you have to change shifter stuff with the vr4 box? i had trouble when putting the vr4 box in my awd

ill be putting a evo box into my fwd later this year so will be able to tell you how easy or hard that is.

dont you have too change the shifter cables when using a km210 box

i thought i had read that somewhere
can someone please confirm about the shifter cables thanks

shouldnt have to if its gsr already, i didnt.
if you have a 4g15 then probably will, but would have to with any change.
im sure grant can confirm.

on my vr4 box in my cb, the selector part on the box has been modified (Bent and rewelded) so Its just like a cb box if that makes any sense.

can't remember what i did on my vr4 box, I did use either vr4 or cb cable mounts but i used cc selector cables tho.

grant did you mean where the selector cable connects too the gearshift linkage on the outside of the gearbox that you have modified

ok on the vr4 box, even into a gsr, the shifter needs to be modded.
i used a cc shifter to start with with 4g61 cables as a short shift even before the conversion. to use the vr4 box, the back a forth moving cable mounting onto the box i changed. the link is longer than the 4g61 normal one so i cut it, turned it upside down and welded it back shorter, this put it in the same spot the 4g61 box had to start with. not overly had, but no real simple either. but also retains the short shift that i had before hand.

oh ok thanks for that i just wanted too confirm i just rebuilt my f5m22 but im thinking of going the way of a km210
Thats what has been in my car, and only now it's starting to crap out after 8 years and 170+ kwatw worth of abuse.
If you just rebuilt it, use it.

i was going too until it strips a gear or does a synchro hub or something huge that would cost too much too fix and i was thinking about doing an AWD conversion i now its a big thing too do but ive got the tools and the space too do it soo i was thinking of doing soo soon if i can get this other gsr

dude, please please dont bother with an awd conversion. unless you have a cyborg awd ready to scrap, and about 10g to throw at it knowing you will never get it back. seriously, this community knows of one guy serious enough to do it on a two door hatch, there was a write up on the gsrcyborg forum, and he had a full 2 door awd in NZ cut in half and sent over.
its just really not worth it for the time and money.

sorry to get off topic.

really there you go ill keep it fwd then haha ive never read anything on awd conversions but thanks for that information i never thought it would be that hard but thank you man for that much appreciated

trust me, i have both fwd and awd model cb's.
i do have lots of parts for a awd cb soon to be packed into a container. and i still probably wont look at doing it!! and trust me i have heaps of spares and access to heaps also.
