Did any Galants come with tow bars from factory at all?

If so, which ones would fit?

Would a GSR hatch tow bar fit? Or if the rear bumper/chassis section completely different?

I need one to fit a J-spec VR4...

custom would be a bit I reckon...

I'd only be using it for a bike carrier.. the occasional trailer towing but nothing serious

You can't barry.

The chassis isn't strong enough to take the downweight on the towball assembly.

I mean, feel free, but expect the loaded trailer to warp or snap off your towing hitch.

On a standard passenger car you'll get a hitch that's rated to approx 100kg of downweight with the car itself rated to around 1000kg of braked towing capacity.

On 4wd's this can be as much as 4 times that amount or more... for instance my landy's downweight capacity is 380kg and the braked towing capacity is 3.4 tonne.

i think you guys could be right

we had my vr4 towed by a trailer with a 4wd, the trailer looked like it was gonna break.. lol

i was thinking the amg will be too light for the vr4, maybe a few bags of rice in the boot would help?!?!
lol

It's not the suspension it's the chassis.

The rails are too light/thin and lack the reinforcement.

You'll either stretch the chassis or twist it.

Plus the amg is FWD and you DO NOT TOW HEAVY LOADS WITH A FWD.

So whats the difference between a Galant SE chassis, and a VR4?

One would assume that the tow bar from a SE would bolt up to a VR4, hey?

comparing the vr4 / amg,

the rear is very different..

fuel tank is in a different location
and also the tire well is lower on the amg..

also, the vr4 has those bumper mounts inside the boot (4 big bolts)

the amg doesn't, although i bolted up my amg bar onto the vr4 using the vr4 mounts / brackets / bolts..

im assuming that the amg bolts it up from underneath or something..

AMG rear end is exactly the samea s the GSR/hatchback models.

The fuel tank is under the back seat, there is a full size wheel well for the spare and large openings on either side around that well (inside the quarter) to put **** :D

Or at least that's what my service manuals say.

Ahh right! So it may not be a bolt up job?

Thats not cool!

Does anyone here have a towbar on a SE or a GSR?

well this doesnt contain any technical information but i hope it adds my 2 cents,

umm we tried towing my mk2 escort rally car 800kg (its gutted completely with alloy cage) with a 2.6 astron magna. it was auto and struggled like a mother fu*&er and as much as we were laughing as we attempted it, twas not a good idea. im pretty sure cars like these are only designed for box trailers.

BTW the end of the story was my stepdad felt sorry for us and lent us his commodore to tow the escort lol

SKUZ

haha yeah

reminds me of the time we towed my mates r33 skyline with a 1980's toyota corona 4cyl piece of ****. the thing would struggle to move enough without a trailer, let along with a r33 behind it

but i'd just be adding about 80kg of bikes so no biggie
