Hi all. The other day when driving my Evo 1 around, my gear stick became very very sloppy and I was unable to engage first, third and fifth gears. I can get into second fourth and reverse, but this also feels very sloppy compared to normal. There is tons of movement in the shifter both out of gear and in the gears I can select. Seems like I might need some a new gearshift cable set?

pull your center console and gear shift surround out, then check all the bushes in the selector shaft and base as all these bushes wear out very badly causing the same issues u are describing.

Also check the small nylon bush on your gearbox link on top of the gearbox... i had that stuff on me and it was simular

also check the other end were the cable goes onto the gearbox linkages.............hard shifting has been known to damage the rubber insert in the eye of the shift cable. if that is the case...these will fix it.

even if that isn't the culprit in this instance I highly recommend them any way

Check the cable itself aswell in the engine bay. I had one snap. Gradually it would be harder and harder to get into gear. The rubber surrounding ended up breaking over time so the cable wouldn't move in the end. The cause of that was too much pressure when shifting. Clutch neede to be adjusted so that it was a smooth change nnot a tough shift.

In other words adjust clutch to make sure plenty of free play. And then inspect the cables itself

Here you go... disassembled pic of both setups. The little nylon bush in the engine bay on the shifter linkage that EVOCPE is talking about is highlighted in pink. They break and fall out over time. (might even be 23239 but cant remember, havent looked at one in ages lol)

MR103559x4 these are on the accutal selector and MB580253x4 These are the base bushes BUT u can get decent ones of eBay. These are the cable bushes MB367320x2. If Travis sees this he will be able to get u a good pricing for u.
