i did a search and didn't find anything relevant.

how often do you guys change your gearbox oil? does it need to be changed regularly? or does it depend how much you fang it? also how much is it? i lost my receipt when i last did it.

i got my gearbox and transfer case oil changed around 2 years ago, but i've only done around 15,000km since then.

I change mine about every 10 000 km, but only because probably 50% of those kilometres would be either really fanging it or during competition.

can i ask a silly question... where do you actually drain it and fill it from?

what is a decent oil to put in?

on the gear box on vr4's there are two bolts on the side. one is a drain plug and one is a fill plug. there pretty large bolts.

I use Castrol Syntrans which according to Castrol has been formulated for the GSR, VR4 gearboxes to provide smoother shifting and increased syncro performance.

Don't know if I believe that hype but it is pretty smooth now, that is more likely to do with the rebuild rather than the oil though

I think it is recommended every 20 000km depending on how you drive it, I guess the harder it is driven the more regularly it should be replaced.

Syntrans will cost you around $60 to fill the gearbox and transfer, normal castrol oil will be around $40 and Redline, Motul et al will be in the $100s' from memory.

Perhaps pull out the filler plug, stick your little finger in the hole (if it fits) and look at the condition of the oil. If it looks cloudy then its probably best to change it. It smells pretty strong too so if you do decide to drain it do it outside or your garage will stink!

I have Motul Gear300 in mine, changed when ever i feel like it  (Syncros are screwed, but thats not the oil fault  )

castrol syntrax is the go

for the price of syntrax.. you may asell use redline shockproof.. which is has a warranty that it will last 1,000,000 kms and its reuseable :) alot of race/rally guys with mitsubishi's swear by it..

Jon

I use a mix of Redline oils. 1/2 and 1/2 MT90 and MTL in the gearbox and Lightweight Shockproof in the Transfer.
At least I can now change gears at 7000rpm again :)

because i have used both in the past, and gear boxes i have seen that have been pulled down running syntrax seem to have less wear than with redline. apparently it has to do with the redline retaining any loose metal particles which run through the gears and syncros and cause wear,

where as most conventional oils will let the particals drop to the bottom of the box causing less problems.

but i say that and i still use lightweight shockproof in the skyline

 Not too sure but think it was a Mobil product. Graeme Wise did the work on the car when i first got it. He used to be sponsored by them when doing ARC's in early evos back in the day. Knows these cars pretty well. Sold his original car to the Pedders and did the mech work on their cars up till afew years ago when they went to evo 6's and doing ARC.

Which oil out of the two?

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but I'm about to drain and re-fill my gearbox (GVR4), which was rebuilt 3,500k's ago.

Just after getting it rebuilt, I chucked some 75W/80 Valvoline gearoil in there, just thinking that I'll drain it out after 1,000k's or so and put some good stuff in it.

Initially I was thinking of putting Redline MT90 in it, but I remember someone suggesting Castrol Syntrans 75W/85 (as above - mimmo_gsr) as it's recommended especially for our gearboxes.
I read the data sheet and it says not to be used it in hypoid diffs. What's a hypoid diff? Lol, anyway, I should be ok though hey, because mine is a mechanical LSD yeah?

EDIT: Sorry, yeah it has a Quaife ATB LSD in it, and although, Quaife say that the normal gear oil is fine for it, and there is no special lubricant needed for it, that comment about "hypoid diffs" made me a bit iffy.

Then DOUGMO comes along and suggests Castrol Syntrax.
I'm quick to rule that one out (in my application anyway) because it's a GL5 lubricant, which I'm told is forbidden for the GVR4 gearbox.

Also, I remember brisvr4's comment about 50% Redline MT90 and 50% Redline MTL from ages back. Apparently when he got his box rebuilt, the gearbox man said it was all in good nick.
I also remember reading the data sheets for both of those, and I think they were compatible, and I think I even remember saying it's possible to mix them to achieve a good "all rounder" with good cold start protection, ability to squeeze out of the synchro/hub easily, and a good co-efficient of friction. I dunno, that was ages ago, so I'm not really sure.

Anyways, I'm getting sidetracked.
What would you guys recommend for this application?

Castrol Syntrans 75W/85 or Redline MT90?

Cheers. :)
