Hi all
I have a selection of gearboxes to fit to my car [93 gsr] when I reassemble it with the 4g63

I have EVO I box WQGE
II box WPGE
i think E III box UPGE
My question; between the three boxes is there any one which has closer gear ratios. or is a lot stronger.

I also have the transfer cases for all three is one better than the rest?

thanks for any help

cheers

brian

The first letter is the final drive, and the second is the ratios. The evo3 box has a different diff ratio and requires you to use the evo3 transfer.

Other than that, the 2 and 3 have the same ratios. If you have the evo3 transfer I'd probably use that box, I believe they have more/better synchros etc.

Here are the figures from evocoupe.net to help your decision :D

Evo1:
2.571 (1st)
1.600
1.160
0.862
0.617 (5th)
Rear diff: 3.909

Evo 2-3: (Evo 3 has slightly different transfer and front diff ratio)
2.750 (1st)
1.684
1.160
0.862
0.617 (5th)
Rear diff: 3.909

Gsr: (CD5A)
2.917 (1st)
1.684
1.115
0.833
0.666 (5th)
Rear diff: 3.545

im not sure if thats quite correct.. (but i could be wrong)

I understood evo 1 & 2 to share the same final drive (diff) ratios.. 4.1.. and the evo 3 to have the 3.9 ratio. meaning that you cant use the evo 1/2 box with a evo 3 rear diff, and visa versa. that said you can use any transfer case as its just a right angle drive, and it doenst change anything.

I understood the 1 & 2 to share the same ratio's and the 3 to be diffrent. And as George said, the 3 is stronger of the lot.

well if the diffs are different I will have to us eI or EII as I have LSD for both but only open centre for E III.

Im going to pull yhe back off all the diffs and check the ratios

will post up what I find

looking at the figures it looks like the eI is closer ratio..

thaks for the help

Damn man, I cant even find that thread and I created it  It used to be a tech sticky with a bunch of other gearbox ratio information for AWD/FWD, Eclipse, Magna, Proton etc. Do you have the link so I can whack it back up? :) It was months worth of research  [will check my hard drive when I get home].

The first letter is the final drive, and the second is the ratios. The evo3 box has a different diff ratio and requires you to use the evo3 transfer.

All W5M33 tranfer cases are the same ex. VR4 22 spline.

Other than that, the 2 and 3 have the same ratios. If you have the evo3 transfer I'd probably use that box, I believe they have more/better synchros etc.

I have never noticed any difference in the syncros between E2&3.

All EVO rears are 3.9

looking at the figures it looks like the eI is closer ratio..

E1 has the same crap 3-4 syncro assembly as a GSR.

VR4 is the strongest gearset.

ah ok.. so does that mean u can use any rear diff..1-3 doesnt matter??

what about box's i was certian that the you couldnt not run a 1 or 2 box in a 3? or is that wrong?

thank you for this info...

ok so would you then suggest the e2 or e3 box?

As long as it is 3.9 (which all EVO's I-III are.).

There is a slight difference in the front final drive between CD9A and CE9A. No early Mitsubishi AWD model (GSR, EVO, Eclipse, VR4 etc) will be matched 100% to the rear ratio.

doenst that mean it will bind up a little? or is it such a small diffrence it doesnt matter?

correct me if Im wrong but I think the difference is slight and could be absorbed by the viscous section of the gearbox???

just a guess

My understanding with the 2/3 box final drive is that it's matched to the 3.9 rear with the transfer case, ie, if you have the evo3 transfer you are sweet to use it in any 3.9 rear car.

My "knowledge" of the synchros comes from this page :D Excuse my ignorance as to what comes stock, it's hard to follow.

I reckon the evo3 gearset is the result of years of research into the w5 boxes by mitsubishi, and they changed the transfer/gear ratios to make it stronger. If you don't want to use that box though, I'll have it :D
