Im embarrassed to ask as this simple question, but im sick as a dog, running on cold and flu tablets, and im pissed off :w00t: i want this car finished.

Im trying to put the two pulley's back on the water pump, for the belts, theres a 1 inch gap to get my fingers in with the small bolts and my fingers arnt that good. (though i hope my girlfriend would disagree!)

Anyone got a little trick to getting the bolts in? Or a certain tool? When they did it.

Ive tried with my fingers, tried putting some tape on the bolt head and wedging it tight into the spanner so it holds it, and tried getting it on that way. No luck.

Just fiddley as the the pullies fall off the guide pin and the lip in the water pump easily as well.

A ratchet spanner might get it if i taped around so it fit snugg in the ratchet, but dont have any. Plus ive only seen them sold by the set.

Here's a pic with the pullies just siting on the guide pin.

You'd probably have to do the top bolt first and once you get that in, rotate it so the next hole is up top again.

As for getting the first one in, I would get something that will fit into the holes, like a small toothpick or something and slot them into the 2 side holes so the pulley stays in place. Then attempt to get the top bolt on with your fingers.

With tight spots like those, I hold the bolt with my index / f-off finger and do it that way.

Another possible trick is to pull both pullies out, line them up, place a bolt through one hole (top one), and then put pressure on the bolt as you hold the pullies and place them into position. Get it into a hole and give it a slight turn, then get the spanner in there and tighten it up. Then the other 3, use the technique above.

Can you not get a socket in there?

You need 2 main tools. A long handle 10mm ring spanner (makes it a breeze) and some super glue (holds the pulley on while you are putting the bolts in).

But yes, it's a prick to do.

its a 10mm bolts and you can buy single ratchet thats 10mm in Bunnings.... comes in handy

yep, one bolt in by hand as far as possible, then rotate to add the other bolts, then a long handled 10mm spanner to nip them up.

hopefully you have a jack holding your motor up seeing as you have the engine mount off. Jack the motor up as much as you feel is safe, should give you more clearance =) Make sure you use a piece of wood or similar between the jack and the oil sump to spread the load!

It's not really necessary if he's just got the one mount off, the other two will hold it fine, however...

take the bolts out of the front and rear engine mounts (with a jack under the sump, as mentioned above) then jack the engine up as high as it'll go before the crank pulley hits the chassis rail - this will pretty much double the space you have to work with making life somewhat easier.

I was thinking of gluing the pullies, might do that, i "just" cant get the first bolt it.
The pullies fall off so easily so if they are glued it'll make it alot easyer. as long as they sit flat it cant hurt.

And jacking it up a bit more is a good one to. Cheers people.

Dont worry engine mounts off, engine is jacked up properly with some wood on the jack, i been putting cams and a few other things on the car. Ill post it up when im done. Hopefully in the next week or two

as others have said, undo the front and rear mount, jack the motor up higher and use a 10mm spanner on it

Or undo the left and right mounts and let it tilt up on that side!

It goes to show how many ways we can skin a cat hey???

im not home today to try it will do tomorrow. Thanks for the ideas people.

I also like this guys thinking, he pm'd me.... putting a stud in to get started. good thinking....

Hi there There is a problem with my login and I cant post, but I know how to fix your pulley problem. The thread in the water pump is m6 probably 1.25 pitch. all you need to do is get a short stud, make sure the thread is good and screw it into the flange. use this as a guide to slide the two pulleys over. Use a bit of grease on the face of each pulley to get them to stick in place. When you get two bolts started unscrew the stud and put the rest together. JohnS

Got it piece of piss.

Looks like over to 2 months ive had the motor jacked up the jack sagged, so the motor was dropping closing the gap. I had a brick with a towel ontop of it on the jack so i didint notice it wasnt touching beasuse of the towel.

Jacked it up heaps and i could my hand in there easy.
