Glowing turbo after freeway work

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

other end of the spectrum, probably not applicable in this instance.

but too much ignition advance can cause high egts and thus "glowing" mani's etc.

Retarded cam timing will also have the same effect, as well as a loss of power. But I would imagine a 4G63 would smash valves before it got that retarded.

Sounds like you have a problem, i have learnt heaps from the dsm link forums in relation to the stock ecu.

you can pretty much rule out the O2 sensor as being the issue, our ECU's will "lock" into open loop if it doesn't see a cycle from the O2 sensor in 300 seconds, eg, from 0.2volts to 0.8volts.

Chase, 12.5:1 under load is quite lean, not overly dangerous, but not "safe" there are other factors that you have to consider, ... air temps, octane rating on the fuel, timing, and why it's running lean.

AFM could be stuffed, vac leak, which will most likely become a boost leak (on boost) but these conditions "should" make it richer as the AFM should report all of the "lost" air to the ECU and the ecu should add fuel for the correct mixture.... making it rich, as there was less air then the afm said.

glowing turbo without load does sound scary though, can you replicate the issue by idling from cold start, or is it only when being driven, how quickly does it stop glowing when you pull over.

I know that when i get my turbo hot, if i get out to have a look, i can watch the colour dissapear in seconds, it's still extreemly hot, however it's not glowing.

Thanks 2much - I havent really tested it out but I might have a look to see if the glowing turns up when at idle for a long time.
I want to get DSM link up and running so I can log all of this info so I can do a bit of self dianosis.

Now the fuel pressure regulator is getting a vac signal it seems to be running better, they said it was very weird as the solenoid was never opening, for now the pesky bugger is bypassed.

That solenoid is only used to maintain pressures when the engine is off I believe.

So you have that quick crank and fire up....

Does is feel any different on the road?

Running rich will make the car run cooler if anything. So whoever said richness will cause Exhaust manifold to glow is K-Rudd. Running lean greatly increases combustion temps, coolant temps, this would help make the manifold glow.
12.0 on boost is fine. It is safe and still making good power.

Does it come on boost strong? or does it feel choked? If they are 100% sure on cam timing and ignition timing I would be looking towards exhaust and possibly fuel quality. Has it happened since you have changed tanks?

Nah I haven't changed anything in over a year, that said I don't know if there has been a problem for some time. I am going to get the exhaust done soon as I currently only have a cat back.

Haha, nah just the same mods havent changed anything except for the oil and oil filter in that time.

Hmmmm.... well after a long freeway run home from work and a bit of start stop the turbo is still glowing. Unfortunately I think I am going to have to look into this further, lucky I picked myself up a daily drive recently. Left the car to idle for 5 minutes in the driveway and the glowing is gone then shut her down so it seems that it does not happen at idle.

can you get some pics... how much glow are you experiencing.. i am unable to see my vents from the seat, can you see glow from the drivers seat? is it bright enough to light the ground? i really sounds like an issue,

if you have such a restrictive exhaust that you are superheating the turbo, you should have slow response, you mentioned that it responds well.. is there a limited amount boost you can run? what boost are you running?

also, i know that when i open my varex, its heaps quicker on boost (in higher gears)
weird problem, is the glowing area cast metal or stainless?

Cast metal, all of that side is close to stock. I am going to get the exhaust done as its a good excuse to have it done. I cant see the glow from the drivers seat only when I look under the bonnet.

Maybe the stock fuel pressure reg was unplugged for a reason?

You may have to investigate further or if you want, you can grab a stock fuel pressure reg from me and install it yourself.

Well I had the dump and cat replaced with nice 3 inch items, seems to be responding alot better and still running the same boost. From what I can tell the glowing is gone, I will do a few more runs to make sure all is well.
Next stop more boost and a tune!

UPDATE: The sucker is still glowing! Random question, is anyone else running 272s with standard timing?

Had my turbo glowing last night aswell just before I broke down! Not sure why either but lost all engine power and electrical power than had dull lighting and a dead car. Atleast your car still running buddy!
