Hey guys,

I have a 4g63 converted GSR. I understand on what needs to be done as far as final drive ratios, etc. Believe me I have read the SHIT out of evo-coupe's write up (and thank you so much). The confusion I have left is, do the driveshafts from a GSR fit up, I know to maintain my 3.5 rear diff i will need an evo 1-2 box and I can keep my transfer from the GSR.

Has anyone done JUST a box swap to a GSR from an EVO? (with correct final drive adjustments, swapping Crown wheel and pinion).

Did you have any issues?

I am a mechanic and have access to hoists etc.

The final result is that i would also like to buy one...

If it is all going to be too much I will just swap it out with another GSR box.

the rear shafts are the same and the front drivers is the same...unless you add a viscous LSD then its different.

the passengers front is a small issue....the shaft GSR can be used but needs the mount that attaches to the 4g93 changed to suit the 4g63 block mount. If you already have a shaft that attached to the 4g63 then it will be not problem to slot straight in

the 4g63 block mount is available ex mitsubishi

Wicked, thanks man.

I was actually under the car today at work figuring out the diff ratio, Should have looked at the front shafts, I honestly don't even think there was a block mount on the current shaft to the 4g63. Normally it would be something I'd notice as its been like a pet hate to see them on the shafts, for my own benefit it would normally mean bracket = money haha.

Thanks heaps for your help.

Here's pics and info you might want to check out in this thread about changing a GSR front passenger driveshaft (aka jackshaft) to suit a 4G63: http://www.4gtuner.com/topic/2906-2lt-conversion-faqshelp-ideas/?p=231620

If you want a GSR final drive ratio (and bought yourself an Evo1, Evo2 or Evo3 gearbox). You will need to remove the GSR front diff crownwheel and pinion set (15 tooth output pinion and 58 tooth crownwheel from the GSR gearbox). They both MUST be from a GSR gearbox as the GSR 15 tooth output pinion has a different tooth helix and tooth size to the EVO 15 tooth output pinion.
You can then keep your existing GSR 1.09 ratio transfer case as it's the same ratio for GSR/Evo1/ Evo2.
For your rear diff simply keep your existing GSR rear diff. You can also buy an EVO rear mech LSD and put it straight into your GSR rear diff housing by bolting the GSR crownwheel onto it. You can keep the GSR rear driveshafts.
Sorry if this is reiterating what you've probably read elsewhere but for drivetrains its best to check and double check you have it right to avoid disaster.

Front 4G93T GSR passenger side CV shaft modification to suit a 4G63T block.
You can buy those 4G63 cv hanger brackets from Meek Automotive if you get stuck: http://www.meek.com.au/index.php?_a=product&product_id=338
Or you can buy the bracket or bearing kit separaetly, 2 x bolts and 2 x washers and 2 x spacers through Amayama. The part numbers are listed in the Mitsu ASA pic I've attached too. DONT FORGET to look at the QTY Column!!! You will need 2 x bolts, 2 x washers and 2 x spacers.

Yes don't let BrisVR4 tell you to cut the Aircon bracket to save weight.
heh heh ... bugger he was.:)
must admit it would be much easier just to use spacers as that bracket is quite heavy.

It was actually your post i read on the gear ratios and final drives that got me motivated to try and sort out the issue with mine.

You have no idea how helpful it's been using the information to actually figure out what I'm running, and I'm sure other GSR conversion owners would vouch for it too as it can be so confusing to what modifications have been carried out beforehand.

Now by my train of thought according to the information you guys have given me, my GSR box with 4G63 and corresponding block mount on the driveshaft means I already have the correct parts to mount up an EVO box (I hope I'm not sounding stupid, i like to be crystal clear).

Changing the crown and pinion is no issue, I can do that at work. As for the viscous LSD I have EVO-00X's write up on the gearbox codes too so I'll be sure what to look out for.

Thanks heaps as well for everyone else.

Front viscous LSD's use a different crownwheel to that on normal open diff/ mech LSD crownwheels (LSD crownwheels have a larger hole in the centre and the bolt holes are located differently).
Viscous LSD's also require a drivers side viscous CV cup. Technically also a passenger side driveshaft too but guys can get away with non LSD shaft on the passenger side.
If you have a viscous LSD EVO gearbox box then you cant put the GSR open front diff crownwheel on it!! Unless you find yourself a 58-tooth viscous GSR crownwheel (very rare). Also you will need the drivers side Viscous LSD CV cup (also rare and expensive at $400!)

Cost wise you cant get a viscous front LSD with viscous crownwheel and corresponding viscous front CV cup, you're better off buying a mechanical front LSD and put a normal GSR crownwheel on it. Keep the normal GSR drivers side CV cup and shaft.
Don't forget that if going from normal open diff and buying an LSD to use, you need to buy 8 x longer LSD bolts (as front LSD's use longer bolts to hold the crownwheel on because its got to bolt through the LSD cover and the LSD housing). Part number is in the pic and length is in the description (same as Auto flex plate bolts).

Heres a few more pics.

Excellent. Now the final question before i hack into this. I have 2 questions. I'm more in need to get this thing out of the workshop than worry about spending too much. The box i'm looking at has a buggered front diff. Can i swap it out for my GSR front diff without hassle? Is it going to be easier to buy an aftermarket front diff or should I aim at a complete gearbox?

Is it a definitely a stuffed front diff?? or could it be the centre diff

Also how do you know its buggered?? what symptom did the previous owner say it had??

If the teeth sheered off or something gave way, then 99% there will be other problems with it, such as chipped gear teeth, metal shards everywhere

I'm actually getting the box from a rebuilder in sydney. He's had it opened and inspected. Gearset and synchros are all fine. The diff was damaged and then removed. Hence, i'm getting it at a very reasonable price. I can tear it all down at the workshop no problem but it will only be worth it if i can interchange my current front diff from the GSR box. Haha dilemma

Dove into it today. Luck is not on my side haha. Just incase anybody else may be following this. GSR and EVO centre diff will not interchange into my box. Unfortunately I ended up receiving what I thought was an Evo box, turned out to be a vr4 box.

Not so bad as I am captain positive, my options are now very limited. I can now only try and source a Vr4 centre diff of any description and swap my crown an pinion to get my GSR drive ratio.

It may not have turned out the best but I did get a hell of a deal on the box and when i opened it up it was all fresh rebuild. If i can recommend a gearbox specialist to help with your evo issues, please, Gearbox express in Liverpool. Not a bad option.

Keep posted. I took a few photos so i might do a write up on the swap when i'm done if anybody is interested?

Ok, I'm very confused. I have a W5M332NQZK gearbox (Bellhousing by the sounds of things) but it clearly has the exact same mounting bolt design for a gearbox mount as what's currently in my GSR.

Is this a common thing to swap bellhousings all over the place? From what I have read as well, the VR4 will not mount in an EVO or GSR body. But I can confirm that this box will.

they boxes will fit up to the block bolt pattern of a 4g63 6 bolt{Vr4}, a 4g63 7 bolt{evo123} and an RVR with a 4g63. They also fit a 4g93 in a gsr as well....probably others too but for our purposes these are the main players we look to for gearboxes.

the differences are and older gearbox from a VR4 doesnnt have the bolt holes for the roll stoppers so while it can bolt to the engine there is nothing to bolt the north south cross member to.

so...if a vr4 owner wants a gearbox.....they can use any gearbox from the models above as the roll stoppers are on the block. BUT any thing post VR4 needs roll stopper mount holes in the bell housing

G'day, I have a 7 bolt EVO block with VR4 Head and manifolds and a CP VR4 gearbox. I fabricated a front roll stopper mount from the VR4 one, works a treat. I will post a pic when I have a chance.

I have a few spares here, a complete gsr gearset bar 3.5 final drive, a couple of centre diffs, a couple of front diffs, a evo 3 gearset plus final drive, and an evo 2 case. I just dropped a heap fo gear upto MIcks Motorsports today so I'm generally floating between Wollongong and Sydney most weeks.
