ok guys i've run into somthing thats trumped me. i've completed the conversion into my glxi soupeand everything is hunky dory except my thermo fans dont kick in.

as far as i can see feel and check my rad does not have the thermo fan switch in it. and the triangular rad fan plug only has 2 wires on either side.

from what i can gther my thermo fan switch is up the top on the block side of the coolant return. (this plug has no power nor does the engine coolant temp sensor plug)

this has got me stumped guys any ideas as to why my thermo fans don't work!.

i should note i can get the thermo fans to engage by turning on the ac so the fans themselves work. as well as the ciruit that powers them.

Is it a gsr radiator or cc coupe radiator?? Because there is a water sencer that goes into the bottem of the radiator i beleive i know mine does but i have a alloy radiator. The plug is a 2 pin and the plug that plugs into that sencer is white

What wiring are u using? one that travels from under the drivers dash to the fuse box in the engine bay then under the radiator support, also runs your headlights

Gl, glxi or gsr?

the chasis loom (headlights etc is glxi). so is the rad but it's a funky one havn't been able to find another like it.

the plug 347 dis described for me is located at the top of the motor on the water return side. (that sensor is NOT in my radiator) what has me stumped is how my glxi ran the thermo fans cause i cannot for the life of me find where it was prior to conversion. the only wires i have running to my radiator and fans are the 2 wires that power the fans. this is multipleied by 2 so there is 2 on one side (only one fan used to come on at temp) the other has it's own 2 wires and will come on along with the other when the ac triggers them.

loom and ecu are gsr spec.

i'm getting tempted to buy another thermo switch plumb it into the bottom of the rad supply it with power and splice it into my rad fan. 1 wire in for power to switch earth from switch runs to power for fan. once switch is up to temp circuit completes fan comes on. right? theres no ecu involvement?.

i also have a gl here and it has the setup you are all describing thermo switch in botom of rad 3 wires in(i assume 2 powers (one always powered for thermo switch one conditionaly powered for ac etc), one earth).

i am now armed with my camera and heading to the workwhop for pics.

if it helps my old glxi had the same rad like yours. It was the factory rad as well.

The GSR rad fan i bought off liberoz only had 2 pins as well. I had to cut that connector off my glxi rad fan and hook it up. Fans work for me so far.

as they say a picture speaks 1000 words so here comes a text book.

That top sensor isnt the thermo switch, its the the engine temp sensor which appears on your cluster. Does the temp gauge work on your cluster?
I think you might need the thermo sensor in your radiator which is what the ecu reads off.
Anyways, while my fan wasn't working, I simply ran a wire with spade terminals on each end and hard wired it (looped it) at the Fusebox, so it ran constantly.
Marked here as 'Radiator Fan'. I guess this will help you temporarily, and at least let you move around.

temp guage sensor is a single wire sensor near the thermo stat engine coolant sensor is right next door to the oil presure switch. but yes the temo guage does work and it even works when that sensor is unplugged.

tomorrow i'm gona canabalize the gl for it thermo switch (one i know is one for sure works and see if i can get it to trigger in a cup of boiling water if it does i'll tap it into the rad and use it to supply power to the fan. from what i can gether by reading the electrical diagrams <78 degrees = off, >85 degrees = on once on fan will only stop once temp is lower than 78 degrees.

armed with this i should be able to make a patch that takes constant power once ign is on and triggers when coolant temp hits the right temp.

success. after a day of surgery on the rustbusckets looms and the now aptly named gsr coupe. i have got thermo fans. this didn't come without casualties tho. i slashed my thumb preety damn good.

i now have a 3 wire thermo fan plug wired in and the thermo fan switch is now wired up near the water return on the block since what ever was there did nothing anyway. (sensor or whatever it was had no power so it's been replaced by the thermo switch)

thanks for the help

that top swith is the switch for the air con magnetic clutch. not the electric fans. Has nothing to do with dash gauge. this is according to workshop wiring diagram.

hmm well it's not there anymore i removed it. the stock glxi engine had nothing in the way of triggers for the magnetic clutch for the ac.

but we'll soon find out if i've adversly effected the ac once i get it regassed. any idea why the a/c clutch trigger would be in the coolant flow. wouldn't you want a/c triggers in the ac system based on pressure and temps within that rather than the engine coolant?

also when i ran a multi meter over it on a continuity test the switch was always closed (circuit complete in your diagrams does it say if the switch break the circuit at temp or closes it) another thing i'll note is that when i circuit tested the circuit it didn't have power at all.

i'm not keen on switching the a/c on without gas and the line hooked up properly. so that'll have to wait

if worst comes to worst i'll just have to move where i've put the thermo switch.
