Hi all.. been pretty busy with uni lately, so haven't been lurking much!

Anyway.. uni = poverty.. but I am a lucky boy indeed and may have found a cheap way to get the galant back on the road!

Found a GSR galant on the trading post for cheap... now my question is, is GSR maroon the same colour as VR4 maroon?

Also, does anyone know if the rear doors of the hatch will fit the sedan (doors on this one look cleaner than mine anyway), and if it's possible to fit the front bumper of a GSR to a VR4, ie will it clear a large intercooler? My bumper is OK, I reckon I could just buff the paint damage out BUT it still looks kinda ******.

Does anyone know if the internal wiring loom is the same?

My loom is hacked to itty bitty bits thanks to previous owners (and, I admit it, my own) gung-ho-ing of it. The engine bay is a lost cause, but it's none too bad anyway, but all the underdash stuff is annoying. The interior looks the same, and I think the car has climate, but it is auto.

Speaking of which, I may use the GSR as a daily for a little while, but apparently the transmission is on it's way out. What are the likely causes of people to think that, are they likely to break etc, and if it's just slipping is it possible to repair (cheaply)?

Additional bodywork question :

How much approximately should it cost to get the nose cone removed from my VR4 and replaced with the nose cone from the GSR? The chassis rails further under the car are bent a bit (not due to the accident, just looks like they've been pushed in by jacking the car up), would it be feasible to replace them with the GSR's rails?

Cheers!

from last memory my old Maroon GSR wreck is the same color as Lorries VR4 they use the same color codes....

from the mid section of the car forward the VR4 and GSR are identical minus the turbo....
wiring is closely related in engine bay but missing a few wires.. eg resistor pack, 1 wire on maf, knock sensor etc..
interior loom shouldnt be far off at all, but again a few wires may be missing..
also depends on what model you have HG or HH they have different looms again..
rear doors i dont believe will swap over cause the back end arches differently (but i could be wrong)
you can swap the bumpers around but the GSR has a 2 piece bump made of steel bottom and plastic/rubber top, it will not clear an intercooler (if this is a stock bump)

if nose cone your reffering to the radiator supports and front head light mounts etc..... both cars are identical and can be interchanged.. only diff would be some bolts/holes are missing and would need to be drilled... and where the cross member under the engine mounts to on the front rail...

hope that helps..

Very nice! Thanks for the info.

Now.. I went and test drove it, holy **** it drives well. It almost seems a shame to make it a sacrificial lamb. Maybe.. I can have 2 galants.

Anyway... the transmission doesn't slip at all when the car is cold, but apparently on occasion it will just slip out of gear. (I assume when the fluid is hot?) So.. I don't know anything about galant auto boxes, would this be just a fluid level issue, or something that can be adjusted? The guy selling the car to be honest seems a bit clueless.

Rear doors are different.
Wiring is much the same but the GSR won't have all the climate control stuff.
Colours are identical (minus fade from age)

Nosecone swap would involve some spot welds but is otherwise identical.

Front bar would have to be swapped to VR4 item to clear intercooler, GSR one sweeps back and no clearance.

No idea on the auto sorry.

the galant Auto's are the same as the magna's, theres many problems with them including ECU's shitting them selves.... there is a diagnostic port for the gear box, from memory its in the glove box mounted on the top... you can use an LED with a resistor to get a morse code style reading and match it up to the fault codes in the service manual..... if you can get it to drive and shift right... they are bloody smooth matched with the 2lt Dohc...

OK so on the drive back I discovered more about the shift problem. It won't go into second if you put the selector on "2", and if you press the overdrive it drops out of gear.

The fluid level looks OK, and the fluid itself doesn't smell burnt or anything like that. Is it worth the price of mitsubishi ATF to drain it, or is the problem likely to be the ECU?

Also.. and I'm sure anyone that has owned a GSR will nod their head knowignly, the ECS is kinda screwed, it doesn't seem to adjust the level and sometimes the red light on the ECS module comes on and at that point it's like I have no shock absorbers at all... train lines hurt :/.

I have the FSM, I'm checking it out but if anyone has some shortcuts in checking it out that'd be great :D

um if you need shock and springs... send....... Jurrel with the white VR4 a msg... his got my old ECS -> standard suspension set up, King springs and pedders shocks all round.... i think there still lying around in his garage in boxes....

Nah its too much of a pain in the arse, I'll just get another cheap ass car to drive around. Anyone got another maroon GSR??

Also.. I must admit to looking longingly at the sunroof... do you reckon its possible to cut the roof out without ruining the paint, and also I looked but I can't work it out.. but will the headlining from the GSR fit the sedan? I'd probably need to cut it at the back but other than that it looks pretty similar...

OH UNLESS!!
It's possible to convert the GSR to AWD?? haha...

i'm getting there lol....

roof lining are different but not far off, i would think the GSR one would be shorter...

yes you can cut a roof with out screwing with paint, i have installed sunroofs before and you can either use a jigsaw or a nibbler, just put masking tape down so you dont scratch the rest of the good paint job...

I'll just pay the body shop to do it, that way if they ruin the paint they can pay for it.

And the GSR looks longer, it feels like it has more leg room.

So.. it looks to me like the undercarriage is very similar, how many additional weld points are there under there?

Oh yes, does the windscreen fit?

I noted that the whole roofline of the GSR is lower (rear doors will fit.. if I remove the glass and swap the frames.)

I measured the windscreen and it LOOKS like its the same size and shape..

If no one knows i'll just have to pull it out and check :D
