gsr gearbox

Help Support 4GTuner:

didn't think about those little things, ill have a look at the car abit later on a suss out whats there and whats not

I need to get the mounts and the clutch master and slave and piping, would I be able to just use a normal lancer one or would I need get a gsr master.

Hi Romeo
I pulled down the GSR gearbox for inspection today but unfortunately its a no-go mate. Its damaged and needs several parts replaced which I don't have. Money wise, ts not worth buying new parts to replace them as they are quite expensive.

This is the reason why I won't buy gearboxes for a lot of money anymore, unless I know their history from someone I can trust.
This GSR gearbox was meant to have come out of a working car that only had a crunchy first gear (according to the previous owner). I found no problem with the first gear!!
What I did find however was that it had been opened and closed before with a different colour non oem silicon sealer.
It had a broken tooth on the 3rd gear intermediate shaft, a broken tooth on the front diff output pinion, broken tooth on the centre diff, and the previous owner must have run it low on oil for a while because it was black inside and the shim in the centre diff had galled and fused into the upper centre diff housing and pinion. The three main parts you cant really afford to be damaged were unfortunately damaged and new replacements are too expensive. Then there was a damaged shift fork and gunky bearings. :fuuuuu: As for the gears they looked fine.

Its a reminder that If people don't look after their gearboxes by regularly conducting oil changes, they will find it extremely difficult to find replacement gearboxes in future when theirs fails.
Its also a lesson to be learned for when buying a used gearbox that you don't know what you are getting unless you open it for inspection or risk the effort in installing it only to find a fault the first time you go out for a drive
It was pretty much was a waste of money and waste of my time this afternoon - time that I could have spent with my kids or working on my own car  .

Anyway mate, I gave it a shot but unfortunately this gearbox is only good for some spare parts.
Here's a pic of some of the damaged bits in it.

damn that sucks man sorry you had to waste your day for nothing, I knew it would be hard to find a gearbox in such a short amount of time but didn't know it was impossible lol

Na man, I had to do it one day. I just did it sooner rather than later lol
Would have probably done it over the Xmas holidays anyway so all good.

Hey Romeo you might be in luck if you are still chasing a gearbox.
I pulled down a gearbox today that has Galant VR4 internals and they will be OK to stick inside the GSR gearbox casing I pulled out last week.
Basically all the GVR4 gear ratios are the same as GSR except first gear GVR4 is 2.846 compared to GSR 2.916 (FYI Evo 1 is 2.571 and EVO 2/3 is 2.750).
So GVR4 first gear is between GSR and EVO ratios if you want to keep it as is, or if you prefer I can put a GSR first gear ratio in it no problem to make all the gear ratios identical to GSR.
Some differences are the GVR4 has thicker 3rd and 4th gear teeth and also a different and thicker centre diff teeth than a GSR/EVO.
For the front diff I can put a genuine GSR 58 tooth front diff crownwheel and output pinion in it to match your GSR transfer case and GSR rear diff ratios :)
I can put it together on Sunday and have it ready for you come Monday.
Im keen for some extra cash leading up toward Xmas so that's why I am ready to put it together if you want it lol

Oh, and I have some gearbox brackets, clutch line and slave cylinder, shift fork, clutch release bearing and clutch line rubber hose too for a little extra.
I don't think I have a spare master cylinder though - will need to double check.

GVR4
1st – 13/37 = 2.846
2nd – 19/32 = 1.684
3rd – 26/29 = 1.115
4th – 30/25 = 0.833

I know that, hence why i had to buy a gsr box myself when i went the AWD kframe and crossmember.

However Rob was saying above that the internals are usable in a gsr gearbox hence why i put it out there that i had one =)

If your serious about getting a good box, try TMR for a brand new one.

I just got there last one in stock EVO 3 RS version box, brand new. $3500.

They may be able to get more in from Japan, but couldn't guarantee it.

At least you know what your getting, and in the long term it works out cheaper than playing around with old second
hand ones.

When I end up putting the 4g63 in ill get an evo 3 box I was hopping to get it brand new but if tmr cant get it then sadly im screwed!

I just checked, you could probably still get one from Japan yourself.

but would be looking at $3500 + import tax, and freight.

The good thing with TMR is that its a fixed price of $18 on freight for any item such a gearbox.

They're around $3300AU through Amayama for the non LSD version and over $4000 for the LSD version - that's at cost price just the gearbox alone without everything else.
If you can get someone to manage everything for you and you have a definite price then best to use a company you can trust who has done it before.
If you plan to do it by yourself, there's a lot involved in paperwork and a lot of hidden fees that you never expected that all add up and will cost easily over $1000 on top of the purchase price in GST, Tariff, Customs fees, import agent fees etc.
