Hi Guys,

Im in the market for a 94-95 GSR and just wanted to know a few things about them before I make a purchase......

I'm aware that driving with a lead foot is bad for any car in terms of fuel mileage (let alone 4wd turbo), but just wanted to know what the GSR is like.

I understand mods, tyres, weight will affect this also, but what about say with minor mods to pull a high 13? Anyone in that boat?

I know theyre pretty bulletproof in terms of the engine, but have any of you had major problems that are inherent to them eg. say the 4wd system, etc?

So in other words, fuel economy and reliability?

Cheers,

Mick

First of all, if you're referring to maintaining the standard 93t, then I wouldnt say bulletproof, their main weakness is the rods.
Having said that though, they are fine if you're not looking at increasing boost levels.
Also to be considered is that they are now approaching 15yrs of age, so in terms of maintenance there will always be things that need to be replaced or maintained.
If you give them time and effort its pretty fair to say they are quite reliable.
Fuel economy isnt all that bad, although it is a 'higher' performing vehicle you can still maintain good fuel economy levels if you keep you're foot off the pedal.

Yeah, hes been in and driven mine when it was a stocker (a long time ago), and after my 2nd last round of mods ...

Hey mate.

Depends on the GSR you buy. If you bought it off someone who maintains and looks after it religiously, then you wont have hassles.

GSRs have a few main issues which either
a) the owner has already sorted
b) the owner hasn't sorted
c) the car hasn't run into the problem yet
or
d) you might have freakish luck and never get the common problem

to list a few you have:
- noisy ticking lifters
- roof rust
- idle spasms (idle speed controller)

and thats just a small list, the guys on here will probably mention dozens of common issues.

Don't be scared off though. You basically need the patience, motivation and enthusiasm to be able to keep up with maintaining and fixing these issues. As mentioned earlier, the cars are 15 years old now and need constant attention to get on top of things. If you're buying of someone who obsesses with their car (example: myself when I owned a gsr, or one of the guys who have posted above me), then all this stuff will probably already be sorted

If you can, try and get someone who knows GSRs inside out to come with you to the inspection to see if its a yay or a nay...

sorry one extra thing to note... in my personal opinion and experiences, the GSRs driveline is excellent, especially the gearbox!

My 94 GSR has treated me well over the years. Mileage isn’t bad bout 400km + depends how you drive.

Mod wise I have catback exhaust, BOV and 15psi. This got me a mid 13’s.

Other than that just maintenance of the car, bushes and all that crap. These cars are getting pretty old.

Cheers, thanks for the info guys. Its basically going to be an inner city runabout for me over the next year before I move interstate or overseas, it will never see track work or anything like that.

Ive always wanted something with a bit of poke, especially something turbo. I'd be aiming for a mid 13 eventually, but as we all know performance and economy dont mix well.

Im aiming for something clean and quiet which brings me to my next point. I would say a fair amount of unroadworthys are handed out due to police noticing the noise level of the car.

Has anyone got an exhaust system that doesnt sound like a V8 supercar in idle (G5R5OL being a good example of this.....)? I know a full exhaust system is going to let the car breather easier and run better (and attract police), but is it possible to have a set up where the car sounds normal in idle and a bit throatier on the gas?

Hey, welcome to the club-

A 2.5" exhaust with a cat converter, long hot dog and a baffled muffler can do a good job at keeping noises levels relatively low, but still give it more flow than a stocko.

You should be fine- attention wise from the police, if you don't drive like a dick head. Start adding bling, chrome, wings etc will obviously get un-wanted attention. A stock looking GSR shouldnt give you any problems as far as the fuzz are concerned!

dont worry about roof rust.... any car we find will be getting inspected prior to purchase by Tropic Motors :)
