hi all, as you may know i am putting a gsr 4g93t in my jumbuck. i bought a smashed gsr and using that.
i have pulled motor down to check bearings and put gaskets and stuff all through it. it looks pretty good.
i figured to pull compressor cover off the turbo, just to inspect wheel and check for debris and spider webs in turbo and clean it all out.
turbo is a td05h stamped with 49178-01470 do we know what this is off?
compressor wheel is stuffed- what do i replace it with/where do i get a replacement
bearings may as well be replaced too, as there is some movement in the shaft. are the rebuild kits on ebay ok?
what is the go with balancing it?

There are various sellers on ebay that sell rebuild kits etc

Ive only dealt with Kando Dynamics, you can also buy a 20G kit which includes a new 20G wheel, comp housing and an actautor

I'll be rebuilding a 16G with a 20G wheel next weekend

Below are a few bearing kits

You can also bet the comp housing kits with actuators

And a few vids on how to rebuild the TD05 :)

49178-01470 - EVO3 - TD05H-16G/7 (big)

i have the 48.3 inducer and 68mm exducer.
how do you differentiate between the big 16g and the evo compressor wheel? they seem to be the same size

i would like the evo wheel in preference to the big 16g wheel

The BIG 16G is a Mitsu wheel, Mitsu made 2 different size turbos on the earlier EVOs as i mentioned above, the 48mm inducer and 68mm exducer was release on the EVO1 and early EVO2s, the 48.3mm inducer and 68mm exducer was released on the later EVO2 and EVO3, you have the EVO3 turbocharger

Wheel Inducer Diameter(in.) Exducer Diameter(in.) Trim Housing
TD05H-16G 1.892 2.680 50
TD05H-16G7 1.902 2.680 50

ahhh, i see thanks. will order the evo3 wheel and rebuild kit from kando. cheers

I hate this "small" 16G bullshit myth. I have pulled apart several Evo I turbos, all of which were "BIG" 16Gs, and came like that from the factory (Numbers on compressor cover matched Evo I designation and had been untouched since it left the factory). I have also seen the homologation papers for the Lancer Evolution I and it was homologated with the big 16G wheel, no sign of a small 16G. Hell I have two rebuilt Evo I cores sitting on my computer desk, both BIG 16Gs.

The "Evo III 16G" is different to the "Big 16G" in that it has slightly thinner blades and is thinner around the centre of the wheel, it is ever so slightly bigger on the inducer and exducer (<1mm) too - it can sometimes be found on Evo IIs occasionally. I have also seen garden variety "Big 16Gs" in Evo III turbos, again the numbers on compressor cover matched Evo III designation and had been untouched since leaving the factory.

My guess this myth came from typical american DSM retarded assumptions. At best a very select few Evo I's in GSR spec (All RS's would have had the BIG 16G in order to satisfy the Homologation) MAY have had small 16Gs, but I and everyone else I have talked to who has taken apart Evo TD05s over the years has never seen one).

Revised Data:

49178-01450 - EVO1 - TD05H-16G
49178-01460 - EVO2 - TD05H-16G & TD05H-16G/7 (Evo III spec)
49178-01470 - EVO3 - TD05H-16G/7 (Evo III spec) & TD05H-16G

aka, don't assume what you have until you have pulled the cover off and measured.

As for the point of the thread, either of the Evo 16G turbos will be plenty for a stock internals 4G93T.

i know the evo3 is probably a bit big and a small 16g or even 14b would be the goods, but my cover is unmarked and wanted to replace just the wheel, but as the b16g and evo seem to be interchangable, i wanted the same as was installed especially as the evo wheel seems to be better allround than the b16g.
anyway measuring says 48.3 inducer and have ordered the same to replace it.
was very limited in knowledge regards turbos and sizing before this post and now , thanks to this forum i feel confident i have bought the right parts and they will fit and work fine. much appreciated..

FAYI re EVO turbos.
I came across this awhile ago which seems to be accurate.

All Evo 4-8 Turbos are twin scroll designs meaning that the engines exhaust is divided into two channels (see first pic). As the engine exhausts in pulses.. its supposed to result in quicker spooling. From the Evo 4 onwards, the Turbo spins in the opposite direction, i.e. Anticlockwise (hence the R in the turbo name). The Titanium Alumnide alloy used in the RS/RS2 and some GSRS (factory option) has less inertia and thus spins up around 500 rpm sooner. These Titanium turbos can be indentified by the A in their name.

Thats where i got my info, that 1 is the old info, as you can see the turbo numbers for evo1 and 2 are the same "450" when evo2 are "460"

Sorry to disappoint you but the manual HSG is an EVO 3 turbo with a different compressor housing on it.

I rebuilt mine late last year with a GT Pumps EVO 3 centre unit, new Evo 3 exhaust housing and the original RVR compressor housing.
GT Pumps have done a few of them and knew exactly what they were.

Gr8 thread, every thing I wanted to know + more. I think som1 has ground 2nd and 3rd to last numbers off my comp housing ( the 42 is stamped in not dimpled out like rest of number). But measurements tell me its a small 16g as its a 48.0 inducer and 68mm exducer. So the ebay rebuild kits r fine? And for a standard 4g93t the 16g it plenty, no need to upgrade to 20g?

If it's 48/68mm on the inducer/exducer it's a big 16G. Fine for a 93T on standard internals as long as the fuel system is sufficiently upgraded.
