Hello all
my Harmonic Balancer is wiggling like a UFO so wondering if I can replace it and how to go about it?

I noticed the hole in the body behind the front wheel that you can see the centre of it

will I need a removal tool or just a case of undoing it?

thanks

DO NOT undo the big bolt in the middle!
Between the front wheel and the engine is a plastic splash cover.
Remove that first.
You will need to loosen the alternator and the aircon compressor before moving to the next step.
The harmonic pulley has 4 bolts around that big sucker in the middle, it's these bolts that hold it on. Loosen them and remove :)
You might find that the pulley has become quite fond of the crank and doesn't want to leave. This is where I usually resort to thrashing it with a hammer  Gently of course!
Replace crapped out pulley with new one and check belts for wear before reassembly and you are done!

Lol, gently thrash. Two very contradicting words there Tim. haha

I don't wanna steal this thread, but does anyone know how to take off the sprocket pulley thing behind the harmonic balancer?
The one that the timing belt runs on.
On alll the 4G63's I've pulled apart so far, they have almost fallen off, but the one I'm working on now is being a real prick. I made up my own tool to remove it using two of the bolts that hold the balancer, but instead my tool made out of mild steel flat bar just bent instead!
Everytime I go into the garage I remember why I stopped working on it lol, so I soak it a bit more in WD-40 and walk out lol. Procrastination doesn't stop with the books I guess. :p
I fear that maybe the keyway has somehow lodged itself in an awkward position and is holding the pulley on the crank.

So as to not hijack blackers thread if anyone would like to PM me I would greatly appreciate it. :)

hijack away mate
it all helps us in the end!
I'm still learning about these motors so any extra info is goooood:)(I had an AU Fairlane 6 cylinder before the GSR so all this Japanese technology crap is new to me haha)

thanks for the reply brisvr4 !
I wasn't going to touch it until I got some replies on here for how to do it!!

Where to purchase from and how much should I be paying is my next question ??

thanks

Sounds like the pulley has moved and lodged the keyway to the crank, try a cold chistle with a couple of firm taps it will come away but just keep at it every time you go the the problem and it will loosen itself eventually to be removed.

Thanks mate
was talking to GSR50L and he said just undo the big nut with a rattle gun and pull it off
the 4g93 doesn't have the 4 bolts like the 63s have

correct but before you do this make sure you line up the cam gear marks to the top of the head/rocker cover will make it alot easier to put the new belt on if the cams are lined up already

if you do not have a rattle gun just put your breaker bar on have it touch the ground and then flick the key (ignition) that will loosen it!

wiggle the balancer off making sure it hasnt stuck itself to the main drive pulley and you are home and hosed.

I allways put a VERY small amount of thread lock on the bolt before refitting, I just dont trust that bolt!

refit your belts and way you go!

63 is easier - 4 bolts! and NO Touchy touchy that bolt!

Is balancing an issue here?

If i was to replace mine, do i need to send it out to get balanced?

no they should be balanced from new! you will see some drill marks on the outside pulley assembly, that is where they balance the pulley

If you were building a new forged motor I would send - the whole rotating assembly to be balanced including the harmonic balancer!

If its moving like a UFO :)P) then chances are not only the woodruff key (halfmoon looking thing for the lay man) is stuffed but the balancer, cam belt pulley AND the crank will be too.

This is the problem that started to stuff my first engine last year (oopps year before).
It finally led to some other issues inadvertantly stuffing valves etc.....we learned lots from that anyway.

Put it this way: That woodruff key holds the cam belt pulley to the crank and the harmonic balancer to the crank at the same time. So you can imagine how important that little key is.
If the crank slot where the key sits in, is eaten out you might as well pull the motor down and rebuild it (throw the crank away OR you can get it re-welded up and ultimately reground and balanced) at your expense $$$$$$$$$$$$$.

3zercrowd is more than likely right on that your crank, cam sprocket and the harmonic balancer are all stuffed, I've had it happen to my car, I fixed it a couple of times with liquid steel to fill up the worn groove in the crank, as the key is only there to line it all up. The big bolt in the middle done up correctly is what holds it all together, you will not be able to do this up tight enough with a rattle gun for it to hold correctly. If this is all you have some locktite will help. but keep a close eye on it as it will remain a problem unless you get everything new or remachined.

The pulley let go today. The inside of it was completely munched in a circle . The woodruff key was slightly worn down on a slope but I got another balancer from my dead motor and threw it on. It imediatly made a difference. But I will need to replace the key as It has worn alot. I just left it as is so I could get the car home. lucky I got to work when it let go as we have a truck workshop so enough tools to get me sorted and one of the guys let me borrow his ute to get the spare pulley.
It fitted on ok etc. I think it'd just the key wore down slightly and the bolt wasn't done up tight enough as they said the timing belt was done 40k km ago aparently.

You need to remove the timing belt to take the key out don't you??
I think the other issue with my car is tune or ignition related. Least I hope it is....
Will probably catch up with one of the knowledgable qld 4gt boys soon to sus it out.
How do you tell if the keyway is stuffed?

Thanks for the help lads

the keys are only a few $ from mits, get a new one and a new bolt from them.

a new balanced would be ideal too(aftermarket is fine)

no point doing it if the crank is damaged though until its fixed.
make sure the cut out (slot that the key sits in is not chewed out also, if it is you have a big job ahead to make it all ok again.

Oh ok. Does anybody have the part numbers for them?? From what I could see the hole was ok not mangled. Seems it just wasn't tight enough and spun it self casing it to chew out the centre of the pulley

I just checked but the number isnt on the zip lock bag.
I bought 4 of them from mitsubishi last year.
They were cheap as...just ring or go down to your local:thumbsup:
