hey everyone me and my missus have just purchased a CC GSR for a everyday driver after a few weeks of driving around its using a full tank of fuel on 200k's and to mention its stock as a rock only has a 3inch zorst.when we purchased the car it had a few problams.engine check light stays on and when the car would go up a hill the turbo would start to spool up off its head! (like on stall in a auto) and i when i took my foot off the accelerator car would stutter and and was like i would go back to driving fine also black smoke (fuel) would just poor out the back.i took it to my tuner and he put some timing via the crank angel sensor and it seemed to fix the turbo spooling up problame but was still chewing up the fuel.i thought it was the air flow meter so i changed it and seemed alright yesterday the engine check light was gone i thought YES!!!!! took it for a drive and started to bring it on boost and the check engine light came on again!!!! and the boosting problame came back again and i was like WTF!!!!.anyways after being on the fone to EVO 00X we thought it would of been the oxy sensor on the zorst because he was having the same problames as i was on his missus car.well to cut a long story short we couldnt get the oxy sensor off with out pulling the oil filter off and i didnt realy wanna do that.so we left it and i was gunna go see the local exhaust shop to get a new one on.On the way i had yet another problame  .as i would come on to boost i would get like a big miss and the car would jolt like a fuel cut so this morning i changed back to the airflow metre that was on the car and the miss/fuel cut like surge had stopped!! but the engine check light was back on in the cluster soon as i started up and never went away.guys im stumped as to what to do!! or what it is!.i cant hook a diagnostics on because one wire has been cut off.

would it be the oxy sensor doing all this?
do i just chang to a after market computer to elimante the problame?
or would it be the computer and airflow meter andshould i just hook up a evo ecu and meter

You have alot of problems there so in my opinion take it to a reputable mechanic and let them take a look at it.

OK Basics.

Check oil (filter and oil change lately?)
Plugs Right type? BKR6E 0.8 gap, check the leads too.
Air filter clean and inlet track to turbo free of restrictions.
BOV fitted correctly and no leaks. Also check all intercooler piping and system for leaks/splits/cracked hoses and hose clamps.
Fuel fresh and filter new? (change if necessary and run some injector cleaner through it)
Check the electrical connections to the TPS,CAS,Injectors,ECU,all the sensors etc...
Are all the turbo, exhaust manifold and dump pipe bolts tight?
Get the bloody O2 sensor out and swap it over with a mates that you know works and see what happens.
Blocked cat?

All else fails take it to someone to look at.....

Good luck

really seems like a boost leak. check for leaks and change BOV

all so check the small lines that go to the boost solenoid

i wouldnt change it to an aftermarket computer. why would u need to? as u were talkin about swapping the oxy sensor with ur mates do that if that dont work find a same stock computer but take it to a mechanic who knows what they are doin, one that knows gsr's n evo's.

sounds like a boost leak matey......change the o2 sensor anyways and check for leaks cos judging from what u said it like its running with popped cooler hose.....also check u have no leaks in your intake pipe (pod to turbo)cos it could be contributing also.......so id loosen and then tighten every clamp to make sure

Get the wiring fixed so you can take it to Mitsubishi to have it checked on the diagnostic computer (MUT) will save you chasing your tail looking aimlessly at things that may be fine, if the engine light is on the diagnostic computer is likely to point you to the area that is causing the trouble.

Yeah I reckon definitely change the 02 sensor because from what Frank-e was saying last night the check engine light goes out over 3000rpm and it plays up mostly under this rpm limit. My tube socket wasnt long enough to go over the existing 02 whilst everything is still all bolted into the car unfortunatley and it was getitng dark and the mozzies were out the buggars  I thought I heard an air leak around the intake manifold area as well but Frank-e said all he could hear was the wastegate

As for diagnostics, I have a Palm and the MMCD software and cables but when I looked under the dash of his GSR to connect it to the side of the fuse box, his GSR has a completely different plug on it that is located above the bonnet release. i.e not the same as EVO's, VR4's and other GSR's I've seen (different shape and only has 3 wires going to it instead of 4). I've only ever his type of diagnostic plug on a GLXi and yet his car is a Gen II GSR with the right VIN and chassis numbers :?:

I advised Frank-e to buy another 02 to begin with due to the check engine light coming on only under 3000rpm, and then try another AFM in case the two he has are faulty. A test for intake leaks wouldnt go astray either. If he still has trouble trying to locate whats throwing off the fault he will be better off taking it to Meek or Mitsu to have it properly diagnosed.

engine check light gose off when u start the car then gose out as normal then comes on when coming on to boost and stays on

thanks everyone for hints and tips

Yeah like you said above i'd check for boost leaks, change over 02 sensor, and also maybe try swapping a crank angle sensor and another afm if the first 2 options dont fix it!

Today I heard Frank-e put an EVO ECU on it to see if it'll still throw an error and the check engine light didnt come on. It would have obviously not been running right without an EVO AFM so is the EVO ECU a good indicator that perhaps his GSR one is stuffed? They put the GSR ECU back in it and immediately the check engine light came back on again. He's putting a new 02 in regardless, and gonna see if there is an intake leak somewhere. I cant think of anyone around here with a stock GSR ECU to try out.

thanks rob and everyone else for the info.im thinking of just going out and buying a evo a/f meter and ecu because no doubt ill slap on a evo turbo and injectors later on :D
