ok the plan is to put 272 crowers with the springs and retainers. what else do i need to consider and what parts??? please i am desperatly trying to work out a budget.

stainless steel valves
adjustable cam gears
gates racing belt
head porting
cometic head gasket
rocker cover seal gasket kit
VRS Kit

jon, whats a VRS kit?

do you think porting a VR4 head is really necessary? at what kind of power levels do the stock ports become a restriction.

same for valves...

for the cost involved of machining the valve seats, installing valves, then cc'ing the chambers, is it worth the gains when working to a budget?

VRS Kit is a Valve Regrind Kit aka Head Gasket kit with all parts needed.

when i mean porting i mean cleaning up the short edges on the factory head.

Just depends what you wanna do mate and what sort of budget you have. You've covered springs and retainers to suit the big cams so that's pretty much it to go with the cams unless you also want a set of adjustable cam gears to dial them in for fine tuning.

The valves, valve seat job, valve guides, porting, valve stem seals etc are just an option and not a necessity so you dont have to include them if your budget wont allow it.

Instead I'd throw in some bigger 3G hydraulic lifters while the cams are out and of course whenever the head's been off and shaved make sure you get a new multi-layer steel headgasket, new timing belt and a set of ARP head bolts to be on the safe side

When you want to be sticking to a low budget, buying ss valves, manganese bronze guides, angle valve jobs, porting etc is a contradiction in terms as its done to squeeze every little bit of power out of an engine (usually most of the hi-po engines have this all done)

i agree

cams / springs and headgasket!
thats it!

retainers
valves
porting

are really optional

same with cam gears
most ppl leave the cams at zero anyway...
they are their for looks really

He's better off upgrading the retainers for the 272's and H/duty springs. Do a search on 'performance springs' in this forum to find a place in QLD that sells both h/duty springs and retainers for 4G63's (as a package) for under $200

the only benifit with the retainers is weight isn't it?
allows you to rev the motor more freely...

as for strength, the stockers are fine....
dre's car is one example

272/264
performance valve springs
not even sure if he did a head gasket..

he was churning out 220kw's i think with 28psi!!!
race gas but not exactly tuned.. we believe he could have made more
good for 12's..

but the vr4 head ports are huge regardless, porting work isn't essential
