Hey guys I got a gsr and when it runs , smoke comes from
the exhaust , whiteish smoke , when you rev more smoke
comes from the exhaust .
So I was wondering If it could be a headgasket and what are the other possiblitiys , also where and how mch would it cost to replace a head gasket ?
Cheers

it could also be a turbo seal.

i'mm actualy chassing what the other gsr guys use for their headgasket i was chasing a multilayer steel type but can't seem to find one.

I take it the engine is a 4G93? is it steam or smoke?

ce 4g93 has a metal head gasket ....gen Mitsubishi but you need to drill one water gallery hole that isn't there on the gasket

It's a 93 , it's smokey not steamy , it reminds me of when you deflood a rotary haha . I'm not sure how much it cost for a headgasket replacement , I found some gasket kits on eBay for under 100 , but I'm not exactly sure if it's the right one ? The mechanics quoted me 1k incl labour , I don't know if that's a average price or not .

Hey mate,

Is this the white GSR from Altona way?.. if so, i checked this car out when it was forsale.. from memory, it was either a turbo seal that had gone or your oil rings are gone as the exhaust was pretty sooted up. Theres quite a fair bit of oil in the exhaust system so. I highly doubt its the Headgasket.. You're better checking the turbo out first as thats the easiest thing to get to.. if its plagued with shaft play, then id say that would be your problem.

Cheers,
Chris

nah it was a silver one on gumtree a while back, im pretty sure its the headgasket, because it has a bit of leaks around it, or then again could be the turbo but its covered with a headshield, so wasn't really able to check it.

but can anyone tell me how much a headgasket costs to replace ?

head gasket leaks are sometimes hard to test for as often compression test wont show a leak unless it is very bad. I find this is a good way to check for head gasket failure......... but it requires some fabrication skills.

get a new a spark plug and place it in the a vice.....snap off the ceramic section, then drill out the inner section of what is left. buy an air line fitting that will fit inside what you have left of the spark plug. either braze the fitting to the plug or tap the inside and screw in the fitting. next you will need to get some air line and a very slim clamp to attach the air line to the plug......some times you can use wire by winding the ends together to apply pressure to the hose. next get a valve from an inner tube and clamp it to the other end of the hose..

now install to a cylinder....any will do. take off the radiator cap ......pump air through the valve and watch the level of the water in the radiator. don't worry about the pressure unless it is over 150 psi .........if the water level in the radiator changes that cylinder has a compression leak.

bottom line if the above doesn't make sense.......pressurize the cylinder with a constant pressure to show a blown gasket.

yeah im pretty sure its a head gasket, but can anyone tell me where and how much it would cost to replace ?

1k with labour is a pretty good price actually.
which workshop was that though?
Id prob bring it to a workshop thats had experience with 4g's just to be sure.

thanks dean, labour is a pain in the ass ;(
it was a generic mechanic, you can get gasket kits from ebay for 100..
sigh*

Somone with experiance with twin cam 4g's would be a good idea, so you know they set the timing up correctly when they put the timing belt back on. Lots of people f' it up.

Tip, leaving both manifolds connected to the head (when removing head) is easier than trying to remove them whilst still in the engine bay (can be removed in 3 hours).

Place the head on a bench and remove manifolds with easy access!
Clean up and or service head where applicable.
Do the reverse when re-fitting head to block..
Yeah the assembly is heavy-ish, but do-able.

I would allow 4 - 6 hours for re-assembly, depending if things "fall" together for you..

But if paying for someone to do.... Sure a mechanic who has done a 4G before would be ideal, but its not really rocket science with standard cams and wheels etc..

FYI - 4G93T head gaskets are known to leak oil externally down the block from the kidney shaped oil gallery on the front corner of the block (drivers side).

Goodluck
