Help for Galant GSR Gearbox

so i just got given a 1989 Galant GSR 4G63 but its got a hyundai senata motor in it (dont ask) my question is i cant get 4 5 and R with the gearbox the clutch feels all tight when it almost hits the floor you hit like a stop press harder and the clutch goes in all the way.

i own a standard 1989 galant that has the following number for my 5 speed box HG6916 i have the service manual and it translates to a F5M22-1
and the number on the GSR box reads JL6312 and service translation is F5M22-2

my question is are there any particular gearboxes that will fit the GSR to replace the one thats in it i was hoping my one from my SE galant would fit so i can just put my box in and its in perfect working order

What's wrong with a Sonata motor? If it's a 4G, its a 4G!!

Have you checked that the slave cylinder is doing it's job properly? Perhaps you should check that out, even try bleeding the system again before you need to look at replacing the gearbox?
 
ill have a look at it tomorrow but i disconnected the control arms for the shifter and manually tried shifting the box into gear and i can find 1 2nd 3rd and they all move the car forward 4th is there and shifts in but when you get the clutch and disengage to see if it moves it just grinds loud and pops out of gear and 5th and reverse dont seem to engage proper so im thinking they just drove it the way they drove the last motor into the ground lol im happy to replace the gearbox with the one from my donor ie SE galant if it will fit but cause the SE has rego on it atm id rather make sure its going to fit before i go about ripping the box out and being stuck with no car.

Is there a washer under the reverse switch on the box? If not, it can stock too far into the box and make it nearly impossible to get 5th or rev.


yer that's a good check...


from memory the se and gsr should have the same 5 speed box in it... but you can check via part numbers on the box them selves..

also there are 2 different fwd boxes from memory... ratios are the same but ones shifter linkages are different and throw the opposing direction...

thanks for this info but that still wouldnt explain the 4th gear only grinding instead of engaging into gear and moving i think i will replace the gearbox with mine from the SE as i think my old girl has seen better days its on its 3rd engine in its life
 
i had a gearbox once that the clutch felt tight near the end of its travel.The clutch fork was worn on its pivot so when you went to disengange the clutch it used the bell housin as a pivot instead which changes its leverage point so the clutch went twice as hard.
easy to see,just look at the clutch fork to the slave cylinder,it should be about middle of the opening of the gear boxor at least a little closer to the slave cylinder.if its 3/4 away from the slave cylinder in its hole ,then you will need to pull the box out and put a washer under the pivot ball where it screws into the box.

as far as different gearboxs,galant se is the same but with a slightly taller final drive.and the biggest fwd box you can fit is as a 1988to 91 magna box,but you need the flywheel as well.really tall final drive so you can pull 120km/h in 2nd at 6500rpm.
