HELP: GSR is overheating!

Hi everyone,

My GSR is suffering from some pretty heavy over-heating problems at the moment and i'm unsure as why?

So there's are the symptons:

-Drinking lots of coolant
- Hearing a seething like sound, like a cook off of fluid
- Over-heating quite rapidly

It's not however, blowing smoke, or loosing power, just hitting the high temp gauge

At the moment, i think it could be either the thermostat or clogged radiator, but i'm unsure and was hoping someone could confirm this for me?

I've tried turning on the heater and no hot air comes out? i've also done a recent radiator flush and it was working fine for a few days and now it's over-heating again, the thermo fan does work

Anyway, if you have any suggestions that would be great as i'm struggling with what it is!

try taking the thermosate out and see what happen's. Get the radiator cleaned at a specialist place including removing the tanks to flush the core out. If none of this works, could be the water pump failed other than that head gasket blown/warped head...

thanks mate, i'll try the thermostat first and work towards a new radiator as it was pretty dirty when i cleaned it out, as for the water pump, how would i know that would of failed? as for the gasket, like i mentioned, i don't see any smoke, just eating coolant and there's no loss in power

leak down test. sounds like blown head gasket.

Quick way of determining if head gasket is fucked, is to hold a piece of cardboard/paper behind the tailpipe for a few minutes while car is idling...If it ends up dripping wet..then your head gasket is shagged.

You say you are losing a lot of water, but where is it going? simple test let the car idle and hear/see where the leak sound is coming from and visually identify where the water is coming out. Spread a heap of newspaper or something under the engine bay whilst idling in your driveway and then when you hear the hissing sounds turn off the engine and check where water has fallen onto the newspaper. You should find evidence of water coming out from somewhere, you just need to be attentive. Whilst idling, feel the bottom radiator hose as the temperature rises. If your thermostat is working properly, at about a little past halfway-3/4 temp on the gauge the thermostat will open and the bottom radiator hose will suddenly get hot and your thermo fan will switch on automatically. You mentioned that the thermo fan switches on so a clogged thermostat may or may not be your problem.

I imagine you are running a 4G93T? Apart from the locations mentioned in the above posts, other spots you should check are the water hoses to the idle stepper controller under the throttle body, waterpump or pipes connected to it, the water hoses around the turbo, the rubber hoses running to the oil filter housing, or even the hoses running to the firewall to your plastic heater core pipes. All these hoses deteriorate with age and heat, soften up and split. Due to the age of our cars the rubber hoses in our engine bays should have been replaced a long time ago.

If you still cant find evidence of water loss from under the engine bay and cant hear where the hissing is coming from then its a good chance your problem is to do with the heater core. e.g after a radiator flush you could have shifted crud from inside the radiator and its moved to your heater core instead - the ol' heater core and heater core pipes have been a thorn in the side of many CC Lancer/GSR/EVO owners over the years. If the heater core is blocked it could be the reason why you arent getting heat out of the heater. It could be a split core or leaking/damaged plastic heater core elbows attached to it. Water may be running down the inside of your driver/passenger footwells inside the car. Try lifting the carpet in the passenger footwell in the area behind the console/cigarette lighter and feel for water. You should also be able to smell it from inside the cabin if you havent already. If thats your problem then bypass the heater core altogether as a temporary fix to get you going again until you have time to replace the core. The heater core pipes both run through the firewall behind the intake manifold. Remove both hoses from the plastic yellow pipes at the firewall and join them together using a spare length of pipe about 2" long as a joiner. Then you should be up and running and ready to go provided that the blockage didnt create a fail in another hose elsewhere in the engine bay.

Thanks for the reply Evo-00X, I had a good look around and it ended up being a split radiator hose, one of the little 3 inch radiator hoses underneath the AFM, all fixed now and it's running good
