hey guys ive been going thru all the topics and cant find my answer can some one help me out...i have a 96 rvr ssg and i need a transmission but i cant get a hold of one because im pretty sure not all rvr transmissions are the same...

what are my best options on a transmission???

transmission number w5m332wnxl and my rear diff is a 3.545

my rvr mods

Wiseco HD 1400 piston
Manley rod
Gsc S2 274/274 cams
BC spings retainers ect ect
Ported heads
PTE 880cc injectors
TD05H 16g turbo(20psi)
walbro 255L
button clutch
3inch turbo back varex

i think its a dsm style engine

I'm not the manual guru around here, but here is my 20c.
All RVR autos run a 1.074 transfer case & prob the manuals too.
I'm guessing your front diff is a 3.8 57/15
So if you plan on using an earlier man box with the 3.866 diff,
you will have to use a 1.090 man transfer case.
Cheers

thanks for replying...

i just want any gearbox that matches so i can get back on the road but im not sure what will fit my car

i pretty sure its the gearbox unless theres a front diff ... i pulled out the transfer thats good and rear diff good too.... the car wont move at all just makes a broken sound when i try to go... feels like all gears are still there reverse kind of still moves the car but really jumpy....i was at the drags launched it moved/skid for 2sec and bang ... i thort it was the transfer but it wasnt....

thanks for replying

nah clutch is fine still hear it working still engages and dis engages .. only 1000kms on the exedy button clutch so pretty much new

Here goes.... Front diff is in box. Sounds like output shaft to me by the way.... Replacement gearboxes are hard to come by, had my fun with that one... Similar to VR-4 box so worse case scenario is get hold of one and rebuild a hybrid if need be. I couldn't see what state you are in but there is a wealth of knowledge on this forum, just have to be patient sometimes.

Hey, it may also have smashed the centre diff apart as well.. Thats pretty common ! The evo 2/3 box has a lot more in common with your RVR box than a VR4 gearbox. Some VR4 parts may be used, but not many. The gearset and shift forks etc are essentially different. The VR4 bell housing is different as well. Depending on which version RVR box you have, the 3rd gear/ centre diff helix could be different to a VR4. You are better off sourcing an Evo 2/3 gearbox ( hard to find though !), or another RVR box. Theres not a lot I can add without seeing the inside of the gearbox.. but your description sounds like its internal, and not transfer or diff. Even of you break an output shaft, It should still drive ( but only just !) There should be a couple of guys in Melbourne who can help... otherwise PM me . I'm in Adelaide, but I do have a fair range of gearbox stuff. Cheers Mike .

thanks for the reply.. ive had a look at the centre diff thats fine i put in a new centre diff when i got the clutch done 1000kms ago but i think your right my best option is to source a evo23 or rvr box.... can you tell me this thing about matching the gearbox transfer and diff ratio up because i was told if they dont match up its the end of the transmission and diff life once i leave the drive way?

sorry about the questions i can build engines but not so good with the drive line part

thanks again

Mike, I think your proposal has more merit than mine, would also explain why its "jumpy", ie.. it could be catching the teeth sometimes but not always. EVO 2/3 boxes much more in common for sure, just thought the VR4 box is more easily obtained and was only thinking of comparability of some internals which may be required.
As far as diff ratios go and problems caused, you may come across 2 common ratios with the RVR, being 3.9 or 3.5 (one decimal point will do for now), if you source a 3.9 box and slotted it in, your front diff will turn at a slower rate than your rear, leading to old fashioned wind up and possibly blowing apart one of the diffs.
If you get a 3.9 box (say, from a hsgr), you can change the crown from your to the new box to keep the original 3.5. I believe this is right... Hope this is right Mike?

From the RVR boxes I've had here, its most likely that you have a 3.909 front diff. Its easy to check the transfer ratio.. just turn it and count how many turns for the input to the output.
Usually 0.92, so 3.909 front diff x 0.92 transfer = 3.545 rear diff

You say the centre diff is ok... can you confirm you have actually flicked the gearbox apart and visually inspected it since the no drive dilemma ?

I looked up your gearbox no. on CAPS. It is very close to EVO1. It uses a 3.9 rear diff. You need to check your shit. Don't count on the markings on the casings to be a true representation of whats inside. Some one like me may have changed it all. You need to make sure that the front and rear ratios match. This is not difficult but it is important. You have many options to repair this problem. All of them will be expensive. If you dont want to change the rear diff, then you can fit a GSR box. It will already be thrashed. Then you will have to rebuild it. If you want to repair your box or get an EVO box you need an RVR diff 3.9 to suit. Good luck and be careful.

Pull it apart and have a look. Its gotta come out anyway.
Download the evo manual for the gearbox teardown. You wont need a press until after you can see whats wrong. If you can do engines, you can do gearboxes. I think gearboxes are easier.

i will pull apart the gearbox and will post pic up of internals when i have the time this week but thanks you all

Apart from the front diffs/transfer case that could be a different ratio, is there anything else different to a SSG and HSG box ? i've been offered one that i want to pick up today, and if it's right i'll grab it asap if someone could help me out please.

RVR HSG Gearbox code is W5M332UMGL:

U =
Front diff ratio: 4.200: 63 tooth front diff crownwheel and 5 tooth output pinion. (As used in EVO 3 only)
Needs transfer case: 1.074 (As used in EVO 3 only)
Needs rear diff ratio: 3.909 (Same as all EVO 1,2 3)

M =
RVR HSG (Evo spec) model

G =
Front Diff LSD options = non LSD model

L =
Vehicle Fitment = 6/92-98 RVR, Nimbus, Expo, Spacewagon FWD & AWD

Basically it will run the same front and rear diff ratios as an EVO 3.

And no... your normal SSG RVR drivetrain isn't compatible with that gearbox, unless you put the SSG RVR front diff crownwheel and output pinion into the HSG RVR gearbox, and use your existing SSG transfer case and rear diff.

cheers

Rob.

As per PM, thanks heaps. I'll just swap front diffs. I bought the HSG one down here after looking for ages, and it was pretty cheap.

Pete.
