Im running an Evo 3 AFM with the dreaded oval shapped outlet (about 4" oval????).

I need a pipe adaptor, oval to 3" round (not silicon at this stage - stainless or alloy) that steps down to suit the turbo intake...
(i have fabricated a rough adaptor to get by and be able to use the car, but want it done properly)

Ideally a 90 degree one, but would modify existing pipework if can only get a straight one.

Have been having a bit of trouble with this... has anyone else been down this road

Do you want the rubber that fits on the AFM? Grab a 4" to 3" reducer, and when you put the 4" side on the oval MAF, it will fit snug.

Thanks, but I'm not after the rubber bit

Ideally I want the transition point made out of metal (stainless or alloy) so that there is no chance of turbulent flow or the silicon/ rubber adaptor being sucked in by the vacuum created by the turbo at high boost.

I dont want the following combination - "oval AFM outlet to silicon 4" to 3" adaptor to 3" intake pipe to turbo"
I've had problems with turbulent flow before... it was "my Gremlin" :)

Maybe I need to get one custom made...

I dont get it then, do you want a metal piece to attach directly to your AFM?
I have what Dre has suggested above.

Yup I had the same as Dre suggested made over 200kws @ the wheels. With no "terbulent" flow issues...

^^ I made 220kw atw with the 4" to 3" rubber joiner and had no issues with "turbulent flow" either....

You also want a bit of flex between the air intake pipe and the airflow meter IMHumbleO.

yes a piece of metal straight onto the AFM.. already at 235kwatw, more coming :)

you need some flex because the engine moves around i can almost certainly assure you using a metal section WILL eventualy leak

Yes on some flexibility needed... the intended (and current setup) has some flex

Currently, the silicon joiner between turbo inlet shroud and inlet pipe has some flex and the silicon joiner that I will use to join the oval to oval pipes together will allow some more.. thirdly the air filter is positioned in an unrestricted location to allow some additional movement from engine twisting under load..

I will monitor "if" more flexibility is needed B)

or the silicon/ rubber adaptor being sucked in by the vacuum created by the turbo at high boost.

if you have any vacumn restriction at all at this point you need bigger AFM and/or air filter, but if you got 235 you already know this.

I'm actuually about to create the exact same piece you are looking for (hoping to get it done this weekend)
I have an HKS RS intake going to AFM them to the HKS pod filter. I want to remove the afm completely but straight 4" silicone is too big...

I'm going to use aluminium sheet, from a roadsign.. ( I didn't pinch it, it was obtained legitamitely!!) Will attempt a carboard job first to get the template right...

Mine would be straight.. You could get an Injen intake cheaply to feed the tubby, just a bit of battery relocation required....

FWIW - 265awkw with an AFM in place (still has the honeycombe, I just unplugged the AFM to rum MAP - that's all.)

I've had a look on the Injen site and they use the same bloody picture for all their short ram pipe models and its for use without the AFM :(

Does the one you use have have the oval shaped end im chasing or have I misunderstood you.? lol

Battery has been relocated.

Yeah, if all else fails, I will fabricate one myself also

Reading again, not sure we're doing the same thing..???

I'm eliminating the AFM.. Seems you want to eliminate the rubbery intake crapola from AFM to compressor housing....? Or do you want both??

On what I need;
My HKS RS intake has an oval end which attaches to the AFM then an adapter plate which is 4'" round to go to the air filer... I'm running MAP and don't need / want the AFM.

I can't believe no-one makes them, even in the USA.. Seems ppl want to spend more $$ on a 4" FP intake with a silicone reducer at the compressor housing, which from all accounts aint the best idea..

Take a pic of what you have..

What about this

Evocpe... those pipes look round on each end... and a bit pricey.. thanks for the link tho..

mmm, will try to source a 4" stainless off cut and squish it to the shape required.

Pic below is what I am currently using.. essentially a 3" stainless "S" bend with a very rough, fast transition to oval at the AFM end (note: there are no sqare corners on the ID)

Also note the plastic bottle that captures any over flow from the radiator reservior  (needed for the motorplex, funny, they accept this temporary setup - no fluid on track!)

nice intake eiii

i was watching a (u tube?) clip with jesse james from monster garage, and he anneals ali plate with a carburising (acetalyene rich) oxy flame. this makes the ali plate very soft and malleable, to the point where you can hand bend 6mm plate like it is cooked lasagne sheets.

how easy would tapered intakes be if you can manipulate the plate by hand !!

cant find clip now tho!

Oh yeah.. thats the shit!! Nice find...

For 40US you cant go wrong.. an offcut 4" stainless would probably cost the same.

The "round" end looks smaller than 3" but thats ok, can modify..

Thanks HEAPS EVOCPE
