hey guys im hoping you can help me out.

i picked up a nice stock as a rock 95 turbo auto rvr yesterday an have noticed today that after a decent drive when i pull up the revs go up an start to bounce between 2000ish an 3000ish an when i turn it off the overflow sounds like its over heating but the temp gauge never goes over half.

thanks in advance

In the evo 1-3 sticky is a topic on isc idle issues. check it out as it sounds like a bad isc.

Is there any water in radiator?
Is the radiator hose hard when hot and after driving car?
Does the thermo fan cut in and out?
Does the radiator have a noticeable difference in temp between the top and bottom after driving?

If the ISC checks out OK, dont forget to check the TPS as Khubner advised.
Usually when people loosen the TPS (throttle position sensor) screws and adjust the TPS body slightly, it stuffs up the 'zero percent' base value reading to the ECU.
It can then cause the engine to sound like its hunting with revs jumping up and down constantly even when the car is warm.
I had the same problem in my Nimbus for ages because I had to remove the throttle body to check the ISC pinouts with a multimeter but it checked out OK.
Bolting it back on and it was still hunting at idle. I then adjusted the TPS body a couple of millimetres and walah... hunting problem disappeared straight away.

when you say " the over flow sounds like it is overheating" ............are there bubbles in there? is the over flow bottle overfilled?....full to the top?

yes to the questions....suspect head gasket

Hey mate, just quickly im having the EXACT same symptoms in mine, the revs jump up high in park and also when I start the car, the idle is rough as and if the revs go from high to low quickly the car almost dies, after I stop and open my bonnet I can hear a gurgling noise coming from the radiator and the overflow tank is quite full. Could this be my head gasket?

is the top hose really hard very quickly after starting up car from cold?...yes....another sign head gasket gone.

top up radiator and put cap on but only to first stop point....drive car ....noise should disappear.

top up radiator when engine warm/hot and with engine running. install rad cap fully.....mark level of fluid in over flow bottle.

allow car to cool to cold.....check marked level...should be lower. if same level cap is fucked. get new cap and repeat. if level goes up and continues to rise....head gasket also fucked

why your idle rises and falls no idea

Hey,

Nope top hose is nice and softish even after about 2 mins of idle. After i checked that I took the cap off and checked for bubbles in the coolant..nothing, everything looked good.
I hope its nothing to do with the head gasket, i only had the head rebuilt 500kms ago haha!

i forgot i started this topic.

my idle issue turned out to be the ics stuffing up so got that fixed.

i'm not to sure what was the cause of the bubbling in the over flow cause my radiator blew up before i found the problem an hasn't done it since but now i need to do the thermostat an possibly the water pump if anyone has the part numbers handy?

How or what caused the radiator to "blow up" ?

Might wanna sort that out.....
