Hoist.. what would you choose

Hey Guys,

just want to know what you guys would do/choose..

4 different types of hoists..

This is the drama. I have (will have in the near future) a 6m x 7.6m x 3m Shed.

With the size of the shed and the fit out I want to do im limited to these 4 hoists..

First one is your normal 2 post hoist, but I do loose "floor space" with the posts, but I can then store 2 cars in the same spot


Second is a movable single post hoist, which I can put away when I don't need it..


Third is a fix single hoist, but again I do loose "floor space" with it there, but I can then store 2 cars in the same spot


Fourth is a scissor lift, that I can "flush" mount with the ground, but I don't have the ability of storing 2 cars.. but I don't have and posts or anything to take up room..


Basically if you where building a shed of this size and you only had roughly half the space to actually work on a car which one would you choose?

Clear floor 2 post is ideal especially for low cars and even then you will find yourself using a jack to get the arms in.

3m height wont work with clear floor., you would need 3.8m - 3.9m depending on the brand of hoist you purchase.

The space would more than likely be a car space and never anything else , you will gain another car space.

yeah should have said more about the roof.. top of the wall will be 3m.. not sure about the pitch yet, but could be upto 4m total height

the posts are 3.9m meters high and te cross beam bolts the 2 posts together across the top , if you have floor space to run the posts and cross beam in line with the highest point you be ok

I have a 6 by 6.7 meter garage with heaps of height and when it came down to it if I put in a hoist, the smallest being the the Tufflift, the minimum 3.5 meter width meant I couldn't get two cars in side by side so I'm now still on my back doing it all the old fashioned hard way.
Also with the scissor lifts you pretty well can't do any of the common stuff you would want to do because the lift is in the way of most the bits you will want to work on.

I thought there was a portable 2 poster too?
But I like the cross beam on that 2 poster above. Im sure you can hang a chain block on it to pull engines in and out.

Scissors are crap. Always in the way. 4 posters are same the stupid ramps are in the way.
Single posters are same as well. The post is right there.

Benny if you get the chance head down to Radum in Canning Vale (I think they are on Catalano Ct). They have all of the models set up in store, and have the stock available in WA. The guys there are more than helpful, and will also go through a slab design with you for the shed.

2 Poster will be the best way to go. Obviously will be some pros and cons between gantry or floor model. Gantry is going to be the most versatile for the home workshop.
Only real concerns:
Long term storage of car with 2 posters...
Gantry will restrict elevation height

The site ive been on. They are in wa.. but the scissor lift one is a 2 piece lift with approx 900mm between the two. Thats the only reason why I was looking at that one

I did find a 2 post hoist, that has a over all height of 2.85m so it will fit into the shed.. but it doesn't have the over the top bar

is similar to what i have depending on what your lifting you should have enough height to work with

i actually have a 2 post hoist and tbh you don't loose much IF ANY space i'ds go so far as to say you gain it as work space yes it take up real estate but they're so versatile. thing to remember when setting up with a hoist is where that hoist is going and plan you work/tool storage around it.

can even use it as a table when you need.

here a photo of mine the hoist is not picture but i am looking through it at the storage/ having the spanner hanging on the wall provides quick easy access without a big bulky tool chest. admittedly my space is quite abit larger than yours once the hoist is in place you dont realy loose alot of floorspace and tbh those movable hoists will take up just as much room! be it in where you want it or packed up.

trust me once you have one in an easy to get to spot you will never just jack up your car again. we only got our because our mechanic moved and the new space already had one so he gave it to us now we don't know how we got by without it everything is so much easier esp underneath oil changes etc.

yeah, but If I need to use a forklift ill just take it upto work.. got 3 to choose from
