DRAG racing is being investigated as the possible cause of a "catastrophic" smash that left one man dead and seven injured in Melbourne's east last night.

Two people were trapped in the wreckage last night and five others were in hospital.

Some of the injured were fighting for their lives.

Two cars - a taxi and a purple Mitsubishi Lancer sports car - collided near the corner of Viewmount and Ferntree Gully roads in Wheeler's Hill about 9.30pm.

The driver of a third high-powered car was being questioned by police last night.

"Some young people are assisting us with our investigation," Snr-Sgt John Drew, of Nunawading police, said.

Witnesses told of the carnage at the scene.

"It was horrific. There were injured and trapped people everywhere," bystander John Sharples said.

"There were stretchers and paramedics everywhere. It was like a scene from hell. The cars were completely mangled and there are people still trapped," he said.

Fifteen police cars, seven ambulances, MICA units and several fire engines attended the accident.

Dozens of onlookers gathered on both sides of the road.

Stretchers, temporary lights and emergency equipment lay around the scene.

Late last night emergency crews were still cutting some of the victims out of the cars.

The Mitsubishi, driven by a 20-year-old man, appeared to have been travelling east. It carried two teenage passengers.

Nick D'Unienville, a friend of the Lancer driver and passengers, said the men were all well known in the area.

"The car was only bought two weeks ago," Mr D'Unienville said.

The taxi had been hit on the front passenger side and was twisted beyond recognition, its windscreen and widows shattered, a wheel missing and its bonnet hanging by a thread.

Snr-Sgt Drew said the cars were travelling in opposite directions and collided as one attempted a right-hand turn.

Yeah it was a purple CC GSR/EVO from what I can tell in the small pic with white 6-spoke rims?

Drag racing may have caused fatal crash
11th February 2007, 9:25 WST

A 15-year-old boy who died in a high speed crash in Melbourne may have been involved in illegal drag racing.

Police are investigating whether the Mitsubishi Lancer in which the boy was travelling was part of a three-car drag race immediately before the accident.

Seven people were injured when the Lancer and a taxi collided, with four being trapped in the wreckage of the two cars.

The boy, from Wheelers Hill, died at the scene.

The Mitsubishi Lancer, ploughed into the taxi near the corner of Ferntree Gully Road and View Mount Road in Wheelers Hill about 9.30pm (AEDT) on Saturday, police said.

Police believe three cars were drag racing immediately before the crash, but are yet to determine whether the Lancer was one of them.

Another two people in the Lancer and five in the taxi were injured, police said.

Two people were taken to The Alfred hospital with chest injuries and leg fractures, while another two were taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital with similar injuries.

A 16-year-old boy was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital and others were taken to local hospitals.

The death brings this year's road toll to 33, compared to 31 at the same time last year.

Witnesses are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Was just on ch10 news. Definitly maroon gsr, front mount cooler(mashed) white rims with multi spokes. I think sxygsr is on stockies at the moment.
Apparently the driver only had the car 2 weeks. I think i saw one like for sale recently too.
 
100% not me... my parents yelled out to me saying "damn that looks like your car"... i was hoping it was no one on here too... i saw it on the news at 5:30... i was like oh crap... draging racing... rulz going to get worse n worse...

oh by the way, the EPA guys r a bunch of pricks... just a warning to everone! i got my defect removed, n got my epa pass... but i had 10cops after the epa go threw my car, n i got another defect! not even allow to drive the car AT ALL!!!! this performance thing is staring to REALLY get to me... think its almost time to see up... i'v had enough
 
the car in the accadent looked to have ether volk te37 rims or enkai tarmacs in the chan 10 news real

if you can not say anything nice dont say it at all :p i will just leave it at that hahaha becouse i have nothing good to say about them in things related to car sceen and things not related to them
 
looking at the car.. the color.. the wheels.. it looks to be a lancer of someone i knows that ran low 12s back in the days... i spoke to him this morning and he said yer he thinks it is his old car too...

i just read it in today's herald sun..

he was racing a rx7 and the guy in the rx7 driver said..

"i got to the speed limit and stopped, but he kept going".. lol
 
those nissansilvia guys are a bunch of dicks no offence to anyone that goes on there.. those replies on there are pure jokes..

i posted my own comment on there aswell
