how do I tell if my engin is a Evo 3

Hi guys juse need help working out if my engine is a Evo 3 as that's what the importers advertiadvertised it as. Also what is the difference between a 6 bolt and 7 bolt? Do they both fit into a gsr

G'day.
Can't advise about the GSR. But VR4 6 bolt has the front engine mount, roll stopper, on the block. An Evo or 7 bolt uses a gearbox mount for the front roll stopper.
You can fabricate an engine mount. I have done it for my rally VR4. I run a 7 bolt block, VR4 CP50 Gearbox, 7 bolt head with VR4 maniflods.

best way would be post a picture of the engine in question.

But ....both engines acn be fitted to the gsr it will just be the timing cover side engine mount that will be different.

Of the evo 1,2 or3 seven bolts 1&2 look the same but 3 has an EGR fitted so if the engine is still stock that should be clearly visible

i beleive people prefer the 6 bolt botom ends (less susceptible to crank walk) correct me if i'm wrong guys but prefer the evo 7 bolt top end for the beter flow. a few people hybridise the two to get the best of both worlds

inside the rotating parts crank rods etc are different

The turbo is the easiest way to tell what motor it is... if it's running a TD04 it's almost certain to be an RVR 7-bolt. These have different cam specs to EVO 2 and 3 which have TD05 turbos from the factory.

Also, the lack of a Cam Angle Sensor (CAS) on the inlet cam is also a sign that it's an RVR engine. RVR's have theirs in different location(s).

In saying that though, if you are lucky it will be a HSG-R which is an EVO 3 spec engine anyway. Serial numbers off the turbo can confirm. Also it's worth pointing out that if you do end up using an engine from an Auto car- make sure you remove the Spigot Bearing from the crank before you bang your flywheel and clutch on.

There's no visual difference between E1/2/3 7 bolts engines, other than accessories as mentioned (turbo, EGR). Evo 3 have a marking on top of the OEM pistons which is different to Evo 1/2 engines. I.e you have to pull the head off to confirm that it's actually an 'Evo 3' engine.

Search button is your best friend, this has been covered numerous times especially 6bolt vs 7bolt engines.

The sump is flat where it meets the block under the crank on a 6 bolt whereas the 7 bolt has a dip in it as well.
