The link above ..(mainly the second page) goes into detail about an issue that im hearing is more and more common with VR4's
A grumbling noise when coasting or deccelerating at around 2500 Rpm which goes away with either brakes or accelerator applied. The noise seems to be in the rear of the car..almost from the diff area. Its annoying.

Just wondering as to how many people have the issue as im trying to source the problem and narrow it down..perhaps if every one forms collective information it may be possible to do it earlier..Or infact find the cause at all.
Possible causes ive heard so far

Unbalanced Flywheel
Centre/PropShaft bearing and or Tailshaft balancing
Centre diff in front gearbox.

So far i have not seen/heard any substantiated evidence to say its any of the above that are the definite cause...just possibilities.
Thanks
Feel free to move post to E39a Tech if its not fitting for General topic.

i get something similar to this...

it only started happening after my new clutch/flywheel went in

what clutch/flywheel combo are you running?

I have it, from extensive road testing from myself and my foreman and electronic ears we have found it from either back of the box or transfer case.
Never had enough spare cash to do anything about it though.

i have it, have had it since i got the car, the old owner thought it was the rear wheel hadn't been balanced properrley, mine is deff. coming from the back and in the driveshaft

Simple. It's the main bearing in the transfer where the gearbox output enters the right angle drive.

Bearing starts to give way, funky grinding noises.

Bearing gives way completely, shards of metal through all the seals and it seizes.

Not that i've done this before *cough*

If you let your transfercase give way completely it becomes non-rebuildable as the damage is terminal.

If its the noise i'm thinking of (and matress) then its definately a clutch/flywheel issue.

We had a similar clutch and same flywheel and both of our cars had it

When my transfer case shat itself at Easter the noise was more of a grinding sound under acceleration.
Noise gradually got louder and louder.
It actually went quiet under decel ( right up until the end that is! ).

I have the same grumble and it hasn't changed one bit since I put another transfer in.

well,

i have the same noise, i my car doesnt share anything in common with a VR4.

i thought it was from the rear, it feels like the rear, but the description above is exactly what im getting too.

i've replaced my driveshaft hanger bearing, and the shaft is balanced as well.

interesting about the transfer case...

Just wondering what it was that lead to your thoughts it was that area that was the issue?

Thats crazy...whats your car?
A 4wd lancer?
this could indicate a clutch issue?
What clutch do you have?

I have a Daiken standard replacement with the standard flywheel....dont know if it was machined.

This noise is about rpm...doesnt seem to matter the speed or the gear..

opinions.......?

It does my bloody head in Jamie!
I do know that my carrier bearings need doing as well... group buy perhaps?
You can check the transfer case bearing by pulling the side cover, would save having to pull the whole thing.

Just noticed - I think mine does it too. I initially thought it was the exhaust rattling, but since you mentioned/described it, it sounds less and less like the exhaust. It's definitely a "grumbling" sound. When the exhaust gets shut up a bit I'll try and record it.

Hate to spoil the party...but i have a standard issue daiken replacement clutch
And the noise is evident

My mates VR4 has a brass button organic full face clutch with a very lightly sprung centre and it has no noise at all...never has.
