how long is a piece of string :?

LOL

my piece of string is never ending, if i was you id do it yourself with a mate that nose what he is doing, that way you learn alot and know how everything works

I was having this conversation with a mechanic friend on the weekend.

Assume:

* A workshop will charge you $75-$80 per hour labor for a mechanic
* That mechanic will work SOLIDLY on your engine (and only your engine) every working hour for 2x weeks. So that's 40hrs a week, total 80 hours, so
that's $6,400 in labor.
* $1K-$2K for your machining, head work, balancing
* Approx $3K for your parts (possibly more depending on what you get)
* Metal head gasket sets you back approx $200
* Misc bits and pieces costs you $500 (seals, gaskets etc etc)

*Tuning, dyno, injectors, ECU etc etc etc

You'd be looking at approx $15K.

It's the labor that kills you, but you should get a warranty on the work. If you don't know what you're doing then you're only going to cause yourself trouble if you try and do it yourself (unless you're prepared to try and fix/replace anything that goes wrong!)

i say diy.
instead of spending all that cash on labour you can buy premium tools and do it yo-self ;)

I say- do it once, and do it properly.

do you think it cant be done 'properly' at home?
sure, there are retards out there who have their hands growing out of their asses - they should not touch an engine under any circumstance.

But for those that have some sort of mechanical exp. and have access to resources (such as people with exp/knowledge/specialty tools) the majority of the work can be done "properly" yourslef.

makes more sense than paying someone else to fcuk it up :p

I think im with dre unless you know what your doing, or up for a challenge/dont care if you stuff something up/have plenty of time/tools.

None of this 'i think this goes here' and 'i think this is the right way' or 'i think its done' only to stuff something up, and cost you more money.

although like others have said, better you stuff it up than someone else...

my new engine cost me undr 5k for scat rods, mahle pistons and rebuild.

Built from a shop up here in sydney.

seriously search around and try and get the short motor instead of long motor. You should be able to put the head on urself.

Hope this helps

does you home have flow benches and the rest???? in order to build a decent engine id say not only will u need 5k in oarts but 200k in equipment.

Unless your slapping up a Gemeni then DIY is the go

eg.
you can get your head flow tested, proted & polished by a shop, and torque it up to the block yourself for the grand total of $200 (price of a farking good-quality torque wrench) + price of porting/polishing labour.
that will save you about $300odd on labour and you scored yourself a tool.

unless you want to build a 300kw indestructible machine, alot can be done at home w/o having to purchase $200k equipment.
at the end of the day, any retard can spend money on getting someone else to do their work...

Yes it does come down to personal choice and please remember we are all here to help each other.

Try to be nice to each other and not call people retards.

Thanks.

sorry for the misunderstanding, but i wasnt trying to offend ayone.
My point was that, in general, anyone can go out there and spend money (including retards  ). Most (if not all) of us havent got spare cash to throw out, so why not have a go at diy and spend big only as a last resort?
