Hi , Im wondering what would be the best size FMIC to install behind a stock GSR bumper and also incorporating the original piping with a few extensions to make it all fit. And with this would I need to increase the boost at all from the standard 10psi?

It is tough to upgrade the factory gsr cooler and retain all of the piping as the gsr has a SMIC (side mount intercooler). Most aftermarket, or factory upgrades are FMIC, so the path that the intercooler plumbing takes is somewhat different; particularly the hot side piping. Any upgrade tot he factory gsr intercooler is money well spent. The factory unit is extremely small.

You may be able to get the evo FMIC behind the front bar with a lot of careful trimming.
I have seen the factory vr4 cooler fit behind (and it is probably a more appropriate size as it is slightly smaller) the factory front bumper. You will have to use modified evo style intercooler piping to suit.
A lot of the plastic grille has to be trimmed away from the front bumper.

I fitted a FMIC on my gsr a few months ago. was something around 500x230x55mm. I had a PRICK of a time fitting it haha!
there was a LOT of cutting the bumper to get it to fit, and it still only just fits behind it.
I wouldn't bother trying to fit anything bigger behind the GSR bumper.

If you want to try make it easy on yourself, then you're gonna have to do some investigating different cooler sizes and configs. try get something with the inlet and outlet on the same side if you wanna re-use a lot of the stock piping.
Maybe consider a small ish core and get some custom tanks made.
Also, i'd definately look at water to air setups. This is how I'll probably go next time if room is tight behind the bumper

or fit an evo bumper to give you heaps more room!

I'd go VR4 jspec cooler and buy some bends and joiners off ebay, you should be able to make something up to fit.

Or...buy my Legnum factory cooler in the for sale section? It would be an awesome upgrade over what you have AND its not overly big so would probably fit nicely behind your bar with minimal cutting if any.

Pretty sure it's 9-10psi as when I was turboing my engine I was concerned that it was going to be too much boost and wanted to wind it down to 7psi. The only way to do that was to get an aftermarket actuator, i ended up running the stock one on stock boost and it's always 9-10psi sometimes 11psi.

the stock actuator is 6psi, but cos its adjustable you can wind it right up to 10psi. in most gsr's they are wound up to 8psi and the boost solinoid tweaks it too..
for the intercooler, an xr6 turbo intercooler fits nicely

basicly use existing pipe, and as the xr6 is a return flow, you need a 90deg bend for the hotside and an adapter to size up, and it loops back in the cooler, then a straight with a bend on the end to meet up with existing piping... thats basicly it, but really its more complex, as in making brackets for mounting getting exact angles and joins right ect...
it fits in perfect, plus its not massive, and not too small..

I thought the xr6 intercoolers were one of the worst with huge pressure drops? I had an evo 5 cooler behind the factory bumper, had to make new pipes tho.

Anything can work if you put the time into it. You might even want to investigate having a custom one made up that fits exactly how you want it?
