Ok, just i just got home from doing a tow this morning, boss told me yesterday i was picking up a lancer with a VR4 conversion, cool!!

So anyway i rock up this morning to pick it up, its a CB hatchback (even cooler!!), anyway so it was nice clean etc etc looked neat and tidy as it was near the end of its latest build.

While waiting at the drop off had a look under the bonnet and general chit chat with the owner, when i started looking at the box i didnt remember the entire code, but it started with a C??

When i asked WTF box is this he said it was VR4 and they had to modify the gearbox mount to make it fit in the CB, so i asked about the removal of the transfer case he said they unbolted it and got the grinder out and cut the shaft that was poking out........and thats it -_- apprently when they got it running awhile back it went hard, but i beg the differ as when i asked about the viscous coupling he stared at me like a deer in the headlights of an on coming truck.

Am i missing something here?? how can the removal of the transfer case and chopping the shaft lock it to FWD??

 Lil help please fellas.....

early model vr4 gearboxes code reads something like CPH05

if it was a switchable gearbox then he will have no problems.

dont understand why he had to modify the mounts though.

I'm with you the mounts if using vr4 mounts in a CB shouldn't need any modifications shold be a straight drop in

He mentioned something about magna mount, but after hearing the tales of locking it to FWD just by dropping off the transfer case, i was hearing him, but i wasn't exactly listening if you know what i mean.

Oh yeah also noticed some of his go fast bits too.....

Dont get me wrong, ill give him a gold star for having a go and yes it was a clean looking car, but yeah.

as stated, the box was probably a C50PH box. which is switchable FWD/4WD. if he had it locked in FWD mode then the viscous coupling wouldn't have been affected.

early VR4s also used C51PH box which is non-switchable.

and when using VR4 box in a CB modifications to the mount are needed to make it fit properly.

Thats strange because I bolted in a GSR gearbox into a CYBORG a few weeks ago with no hassles

There are different mounts guys.

I learnt this with the AMG galant.
I had to reuse the AMG mounts due to the gearbox being too far back with the VR4 mount in the AMG chassis which didn't really make sense to me because I thought they were the same..

Anyway, as above, if it is a switchable box, you could just switch it to FWD and disconnect the transfercase. If he had the transfer case, then he'd be switching that also to FWD.

Also, he didn't have to cut off that shaft to the transfer case, he could have just left it as is.

hey clutz, i guess it all depends what gearbox you had and what gearbox you're going to.

In my case i went from standard aus. cb gsr (F5M22) to early vr4 box C51PH and the mounts were quite diff.

top one is vr4 and the bottom one is cb gsr mount

see how the vr4 one is stepped while the cb one is flat, to solve this problem i've seen some people just grind off bit of alloy on the gbox to make it flat and just use CB mount.

I didnt wanna do this as the thread hole for one of the bolts wouldnt be deep enough for my likings, so i spent some time modifying it. :D
