Rather that just chuck this one up in the FS ebay thread, but there is starting to get a few of the "ce with early evo/vr4 engine conversions" going around.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/mitsubishi-c...msZalgo=SI&its=I&itu=UCI&otn=15&po=LVIC&ps=54

car has mod plate for engine and seats
I was always under the impression that it was very very hard to legally get an older engine into a new model car for a number of reasons - obviously not. The conversion itself must be relatively simple, or cost savings on the older engine would surely be outweighed by the extra cost of the later model engine..?

Oh yeah, the rear boot garnish looks the goods :thumbsup:

Something dont look right, looks nasty, and is it just me or does the engine sit up higher at the passenger side of the car.

I would PASS on this, one cause i think its not meant to be, and two cause you cant legally put an engine in a car if its older than the car itself.

The engine defiantly sits lower in general... from those photo's it appears as though there is no need to remove any of the bonnet bracing...

How you can some up how good a car is by looking at a photo is beyond me! :huh:

I was just using the pic as it was the closest one for my mouse to get to.

I dunno im just skeptical, as for the mod plate i am keen to see/hear how that got thru with the older style engine and all, wonder how it would go with an interstate buyer??

The 'general' consensus for engineering is that the car the engine is going into must have the same or older ADR emissions rulings of the car the engine originally came out of... but to do otherwise is still allowed provided it meets the relevent ADR emissions rules.

i.e. The VR4 and CC Lancer etc fall under the ADR emissions rule 37/00. This covers all cars manufactured between 1/1/86 to 1/1/97. Some CE's were built in 1996 so you can legally throw in a VR4 or EVO engine into a 1996 built CE as its under the same ADR 37/00 emisisons laws.

BUT, from 1/1/97 ADR 37/01 came into effect which brought with it tougher emissions standards, with several ADR changes over the years to the current ADR 79/01 (Euro 3) for cars from 2005+. See pic of the tougher emissions as the years go by...

Technically, you CAN have an engine older than the vehicle provided that the engine meets the emissions standards of the newer vehicle (it goes by the year of manufacture of the car or year the engine was made available in a production car, whichever is newer.)

In this case the CE Lancer falls under ADR 37/01 as it was manufactured in 1998. For the VR4 engine to meet the more stringent emissions levels of 37/01 he would have to retain all the factory pollution gear and computer etc and prove that it meets the 37/01 emissions levels by having an IM240 emissions test done as proof. Now once he starts modding that engine it can easily make the gasseous emissions levels of Nox etc rise above the ADR 37/01 requirements and fail the emissions test.

Generally, if you see a modded old engine in a newer car then there's no chance in hell it will pass the emissions standards as its hard enough to get it to pass with the stock pollution and OEM equipment attached, let alone with some mods done to it. Just by looking at whats done to that car its gonna FAIL no question about it.

Hope that makes sense to you guys :)

Ahhhhhhh okie dokie, im catchin what ya kickin now.

So in NSW this car would be doomed due to BOV to atmosphere along with the GReddy ECU??

Ta for the info Rob.

Ive seen this conversion in a fair few newer shaped lancers and mirages... and the majority of them were in VIC and had mod plates

You are allowed to run an aftermarket ecu as long as the car passes emmisions with it... Atmos BOV is always a no no

and now the vent in the bonnet for the air filter is on the wrong side :p

Ive never heard of mod plates down here in VIC?

Sux to be you guys up there?

you see more Engineering plates down with us rather then mod plates..... but i believe we still have both...

QLD = Mod Plates
VIC = Engineer Plates
NSW = Engineers Certificate/Report

That sounds about right, dont know about SA, WA, TAS and NT

There must be a reason why.
Perhaps he had a CC previously which he wrote-off or something, and just transferred engines over.
Otherwise I dont see the point, wouldnt you just put a later model engine in there and save yourself the hassle?

Well arent the older style VR4 engines/front cuts a **** load cheaper than buying the newer evo cuts (evo 4 to current), i would assume money is a big motorvator in doing this.

first model of these lancers/mirage had there engines facing the same way as the VR4 motors etc...

the passanger side engine mount they are using is off a VR4 the E1-3 engine and block mount the 63 motor level, this vr4 angled mount will cause the owner issue's debated here a ton of times.
