hey im just wondering wether i need the knock sensor to be connected for the car to run properly??...coz i reipped the bloody wires right outta the sensor and its impossible to solder it back......i will retard the timeing by about 1 degree and not use any fuel under 95 octane....this should have no knock anyway...but my question was that if the ECU doesnt recognize that there is no knock sensor on there will it somehow not let you rev past a certain point??? or will the engine run as normal??

churrrrrz! :D

im using the stock Jap spec VR4 RS ECU....

cheers! :D

ok well unless u use 100+ octane fuel u will get knock, since those ECU's have very aggressive timing.

i would highly recommend getting a new one. alot cheaper than a new motor.

I disagree with this - factory timing is not that advanced that you can't use pump fuel. Especially considering that they were tuned on fuel from 15 years ago - the fuel we use today has got much better anti knock features.

I would say just run it on premium ~95RON and see if it pings. Getting a datalog wouldn't be a bad thing - to see what timing its actually running.

Just don't keep the power on if you do hear it ping.

i have this very same ECU, and i can tell you the maps are very aggressive. U forget these cars were tuned to suit japanese fuel, which even 18yrs ago was still more advanced than what we have available here in Oz.

but hey, try running a map tuned for 100+ on 95ron without a knock sensor and see how u go.

Well, I had it disabled and was runing a bit high boost ( 18psi) Once, on Motorway, fourth gear and bang...head gasket's gonne.
Still use same setup but with sensor on...no dramas except sometimes you feel a bit less power due to ECU's retarding the timing.

Wouldn't have it disabled any more

well im not gonna use much boost (8-10 psi) and im gonna retard the timing slightly too! untill i get another sensor anyway!! so if anyone has a secod hand one ill deffinately grab it!

cheers! :D

remember when the wrx's first came out?
alot of them died due to the map being tuned for jap fuel and pinging to death on aus fuel...

take care.. keep your knock sensor!
