Hey guys.
I have the oppurtunity to buy a coupe that needs some work off a customer. Probably offer him $500 as he is a nice guy. It's a dead stock pov pack 95 coupe auto. Everything is normal untill I open the bonnet to find what looks like a 4G93-t....only non turbo and CARBY. It's an import engine and the Job card has 4G91 on it.

Basically the engine needs a Head Gasket, Timing belt kit, Water pump and R/C gasket to get it driveable again. The parts dept can't find listings for parts cos it's and import engine in an ADM car. They need a VIN off a vehicle that the engine came stock in.

I'm thinking I have 2 options (either one includes converting to manual)

1. Find the parts and fix this engine, if people in the know believe it to be a reliable engine and do a manual conversion.

2. Rip out this mystery engine and put in a factory engine STILL carby as I want it for a daily and do a manual conversion.

It all comes down to prices as I dont want to spend too much on it, once fixed I can either keep it or sell for profit. So how much would a shitty old factory carby engine and manual conversion set me back? I assume people throw them away to put in 93-t's and 63-t's?

If not any one know the specs of the engine or have a VIN handy so I can find parts?

Thanks for any advice

Jon

The 4G15 carby engines sell for a measly $100 or even are a giveaway job. The carby model coupes and sedans use a cable clutch setup abnd are bottom budget and not even worth upgrading to an EFI version as its better to get a GLXi as the starting point. The carby versions have budget interior and the engines suck major ass and when you turn them off they tend to run-on. If you wanted to convert to manual you would have a bit of a headache finding a cable clutch gearbox, or spend more on a hydraulic GLXi gearbox + make a hole i nthe firewall and fit clutch fluid reservoir and pedal box etc. For the money you could spend on another engine, and doing the bits you want, the GLXi 1.8EFI version would have been the cheaper alternative - plus they have a nicer interior and colour coded mirrors and bumpers and nicer interior etc. The GL's in the CC range arent worth the $$ in my opinion. If you want a cheap runabout look at a GLXi or grab a cheap CE Mirage 1.5 or CE GL Lancer that do 700km to a tank of juice :D

The 4G15 carby engines sell for a measly $100 or even are a giveaway item when people do conversions.... which is rare nowadays cause people dont even buy those things anymore to convert as they grab the GLXi version instead. The carby model coupes and sedans use a cable clutch setup and were the bottom budget spec model at the time. The carby versions also have budget interiors, 2 speed wiper motors, no tacho, crappy seats, shitty flat panel door trims and the engines suck major ass and when you turn them off they tend to run-on. If you wanted to convert to manual you would have a bit of a headache finding a cable clutch gearbox, or spend more on a hydraulic GLXi gearbox + make a hole in the firewall to fit a clutch fluid reservoir and pedal box etc. For the money you would spend on another engine, ECU, engine and interior looms, gearbox, fuel tank, etc to convert it to EFI, the GLXi 1.8 EFI version would have been the cheaper alternative - plus they have a nicer interior with variable speed wipers, tacho, colour coded mirrors and bumpers, better seats, pockets in door trims, EFI fuel tank etc. You can pickup a GLXi model for around the same price as a GL so its not worth venturing down the GL path and converting it.

The GL's in the CC range arent worth the $$ or headache in my opinion and I honsestly wouldnt even accept one if someone was to offer me one for free lol. If you want a cheap runabout look at a GLXi 1.8 EFI model coupe, or grab a cheap CE Mirage 1.5 EFI or CE GL 1.5 EFI Lancer, or even a Proton Satria 1.5 EFI that can do 700km to a tank of juice :D

This will be a cheap run about, thats the goal. I'm fine with it being Carby, I'm fine with it being a 1.5L and I'm cool with it being a pov pack.

Does anyone know anything about these '4g91' engines?

it wont be a 4g91 as the 4g91s were a DOHC and had multi point efi. The best guess your engine would be a 4g15 and If you want a 4g15 carby i will be getting rid of 1 in a few months as for i am up grading to a 4g93

Ok, I don't know if people know but I'm a mitsu mechanic. I know what a 4g93-t looks like. I said the engine looks like a 93-t which is twin cam, so one could take from my sentence that the engine in the coupe is a twin cam.
I'm sorry for being a sarcastic bastard, but your guess is wrong. It is a twin cam carby.

Maybe it is a 4g91 multipoint with the multipoint removed? I think I've come to the conclusion it's not worth the headaches and the homework of finding bits for the twin cam 16v carby engine.
