Guys,

My mate has a strange engine problem.

When revving the car suddenly (pulling the throttle cable suddenly) the engine would choke and stall, however if i ease on the throttle and rev it smoothly/gradually it runs fine. Im thinking it's either distributor or a knocking/detonation problem. Any suggestions??

AFM & TPS seem fine, checked it with a multimeter....

BTW Engine is a 4g93 NA single cam (Lancer GLXI)

Cheers,
Alex

Sticky IACV. Take it off the throttle body and clean the carbon out with some carby cleaner

Yeah sounds like throttle problem, but also sounds like a symptom of having a pod filter fitted the the car lol

Could be a number of issues including fueling, electric or an air temp, water temp or oxygen sensor.
I'd start by checking the spark plug condition, gapping and timing with a timing gun. Then check condition of the spark plug cables and swap them for another set if you have some handy. As you mentioned also check the distributor cap and rotating button for damage or moisture.
To better diagnose the problem, when was the last time the engine was running fine and has he done any work to it recently?

I just had one of these come through work doing that same things , and it was the ECU , just open it up to see if the capacitors have started to leak

it started off hard to start now it will just fire up then stall , its overfueling really badly also

look under electrial and its the first one

it still may not be your problem , but thought it might help narrow down the search

as trivial as it sounds, it was the distributor

the car has done something like 450,000ks and was still on the original components (apart from the auto which shat itself numerous times) ! can't believe it!
