Hey guys! I've browsed your forum for a while now but never really posted as found most stuff using the search but I wanted to ask a few questions regarding running my gen 2 4G93T on an evo ECU.

I have a GSR converted CJ colt which is almost road worthy now and although I have a degree in automotive engineering and am fairly clued up on most things, engine mapping and ecus are one topic I am sadly very poor on! I want to be able to run evoscan with my engine and use data logging and once I have my head around it all I can then begin playing with some more complex stuff.

First of all, what is the difference between flashing the ecu and remapping it? noob question i know but that's the level I am!

Secondly, I believe I could do datalogging and stuff with my current ecu (although it is the earlier metal cased ecu) but I cannot reflash it? So if I was to upgrade to an evo ecu what is the best one to go for? I know of a 5/6GSR ecu for sale and also a 6.5TME ecu for sale at the moment and I understand that both of these can be reflashed.

Lastly, other than being able to run ALS and LC etc, what advantages does an after market ecu offer to an oem ecu? If the oem can be re-programmed to suit mods and running conditions then why the need for things like the apexi power fc?

Thanks in advance and sorry if some of the questions seem stupid!

I am not certain but from what I read, its about evo7 ecu that is flashable. Earlier are loggable with ecuteck. Evo 1-3 are good with ecmlink.

Ecmlink is way easy. With forum help to cure your ails and great support.
Late evo setup is cheaper to start but will need you to do a heap of research to get it to go. Merlin guides are great.

Cheers guys that's helpful, yes the colt is what i think you would call a mirage over the pond with you. here is a picture of it almost ready for the road :)

Reflashing refers to the process of overwriting the chip with a updated/new ROM, while remapping refers to the process of calibrating the fuel and spark maps, and whatever you need to adjust in engine parameters. This is then "flashed" into the ECUs chip.

With a bit of comparison of wiring pin outs , an evo 5/6 or 7 ECU should work ok. Then use Ecuflash to remap and reflash the ECU. If its got a steel case ECU, it must be like an Evo 4 ecu ie not flashable .

Edit: realised I was talking about an earlier model !

What loom did you use?
The evo8 -9 ecu is the smartest, the e9 has a different ecu plug setup and most of the e8 use the usual 4 eco plug assembly.
What ecu plugs do you have? I suspect that it is the 4 plug setup.

the ecu has 4 plugs on this model so as far as i know an evo4 -6 should fit in no issues at all possibly even an evo 7

Thanks everyone that's alot of help! Yes correct the ecu is a 4 plug affair, the plugs from my engine loom physically plug into an evo 7 ecu no problems but a correction harness needs wiring up to correct a few pins that do not match up correctly, the fan is apparently one of them amongst others
