Magna AFM on VR4 engine

hey guys just wondering what i would have to go thru to get the larger magna AFM to work with the galant VR4 ECU/engine

i recently picked one up for free from a mate that didnt need it anymore and was wondering wether it would be hard to swap the AFM's around....as in just cut and crimp the wires of the vr4 loom etc....coz the magna one has far superior flow to the vr4 one just by looking at it. (dont know wether it is infact better....)

either a chipped ecu if your running 450cc injectors or if you are running 550cc injectors the afm and the better injectors cancel each other out, but you should still probly use a chip...

...and yes they do flow alot better than the vr4 ones
 
ok coz i have a TD05 Big 16g E3 turbo and 520cc E3 injectors.

also the engine & ECU came from a VR4 RS jap spec model front cut.

i dont know wether the RS models have any better ECU's than normal VR4's but yeah.

ur ECU will already be setup for 510cc injectors, so to use a different MAF u will need to get a chip.
 
www.vfaq.com has instructions for wiring a 2G maf (magna, evo) in place of a 1G (vr4) one.

Wire colours are slightly different on a magna afm plug however (I used one from a jap diamante with my evo afm, which didn't have a plug with it).
 
oh cool!

i might do some back to back dyno runs to see wether it makes a difference....coz i got 150kw atw on 13 psi with the stock AFM.

so yeah. i reckon it would be a slight gain! maybe a few KW here and there. 8)

Has anyone here actually fitted a magna AFM on their VR4?

what was involved other than what was mentioned on vfaq?
what improvements did it make?
what did you need to do with the snorkle/battery etc.

btw: i got the software/hardware to rechip a vr4 if people need (not including socketing)
 
i just fitted mine, basically what vfaq says, is what you do, thats all, if you get a crazy super filter like i have then you will need to move the battery, but if you just put a standard pod or similar on then you don't need to.

not neccessarily, early vr4 RS's came with the same 450cc injector and 14b turbo as regular vr4's.
later RS's also had the same but a claimed 220hp rather than the original 205hp.

The only RS to have 510's and a 16G turbo was the Evo0 RS (very rare), and the afm they used was not the same as an evo/magna afm (closer to other vr4's, but not the same as), so the ecu will not be prog'd to suit.

Correct, but Im pretty sure he has mentioned elswhere his engine came with the 510cc injectors? If not then my bad. If his engine came with the 510s then the only way he can run an 055 MAF properly is to use a chip, as i stated in my original post. And the VR4 ECU that suits the 510's and 16G (MD165808) isnt that rare, ive worked on bout 6 just in perth so far?

i think i had an RS model front cut...it had the vents, TD05 big 16g, yellow top 510cc injectors, and the shorter ratio gearbox

oh and it was white in colour.

sorry, i meant RS vr4's that came with 510's and 16g's are rare (i know of only 2 in NZ, compared with 30+ regular evo0 vr4's, and god knows how many normal vr4's
