Hey,

Just wanting to take the opportunity to do a public service and advise that MAGNATEC 10w 40 is THE WORST oil I have ever used.
It first started when I first did my oil change last week, the smoke.
The oil is terrible and smokey and doesn't seem to be doing ANY favors for my engine.
I think I might switch to Penrite HPR10.

Cheers, Mike

Is 10-40 the fuel saver one?

I've used the normal magnatec in my cb. Jeep and cc (before the big numbers) and no problems.

Not a fuel saver oil.

Not really a fan of Castrol oil, My fathers starion with a Vr4 motor in it and my mothers Magna VRX both had ticking tappets until I changed to what I run which is penrite HPR 10. Both of my VR4 motors are still running original lifters from when I bought them as jap imports in 1993 with no tick at all at 350,000km. also still have the original Turbo's which won't die "dammit" and I only change the penrite at 20,000km. Either I am really lucky with these two motors or it is a pretty good oil.

Yep, as i said in my first post ill be switching to the HPR 10, been recommended it from a mate who runs it in his Evo 6.5 TM.

Sounds like the Penrite HPR10 is the winner, I've only ever heard great things about it. At least you've had the chance to run some lifter additive in it for a while mate.

Hate to say it Mike. ..but both myself and EVL20T tried to warn you of this oil being shit in the other thread. For some reason it is not suited to our engines.

HPR10 here too.

Interesting, I used magnatec for over 5 years in mine with zero issues.
And it gets beaten on EVERY time it's driven. Never less than 30psi.
I've only just swapped to penrite 10 tenths for the extra zinc content.

run it in my daily with a 4g69 and over 175,000kms and runs a dream. I use the 15w-40 though
Yeah , point being daily Bryce, I'm sure you'll need more than that to keep the beast you are building happy mate! Personally a fan of Synthetics, but on saying that I've never owed anything that has been worth the money to run it.
My diesel wash technique is used by BMW and I swear by it (my daily is a 92 ford laser with over 300k on the clock still sporting 175 psi warm) good enough for me!

yeah mate just run the penrite full synthetic! the premium extra ten stuff with full zinc is fantastic oil and your bearings will thank you for it.
. castrol magnatex oil is shit. didnt people tell you that in the first place??

↑ sure did...but he had already bought it..personally..hearing it was shit...I would have returned it and swapped for something better rather than use it, then only have to buy new stuff anyway

Would someone like to explain why Magnatec is crap?
Other than personal preference of course.
I'd really like to know why this crap kept my stock bottom end engine alive for over 5 years or abuse at my hands!

Hmmm, good info. I ran in on magnatec because I get great joy in filling it full of shit and then throwing it out after 20km (three times!!)

Now run in, I'm using 5-30 castrol edge but it's coming out this week as I think my clearances are bigger than I worked them out to be, and at 115 water temp, I got stuff all oil pressure at idle..( After a hard track run, and it heat soaks)

On your gentleman's good words, I try some of this HPR 10 and see how it goes.

Yea that was the painfull thing i had already bought it, i thought screw it everything deserves a chance, however never again.
Bought some HPR10 this afternoon, will drain and refill tomorrow :D
Just a quick question, the filter is a Ryco Platinum Z411HE, its been on for about 200kms running the with Magnatec... should probably change it right?

Castrol Magnatec is good for later model engines and not suited to our engines, full stop. I've ran it in my daily Nimbus (4G64 2.4L) and Ralliart Magna (3.5L) and even though its OK, it evaporates into thin air. Fuk knows where it goes??? it just goes lol.

To be honest I originally ran Castrol Edge 10w-60 and my engine loved it. It sounded good and revved very freely even for a thick oil. Oil temps were good too.
I then switched to Penrite HPR10 10w-50 because people were raving about it, but I noticed that the engine didn't like to rev as freely or quickly anymore and the oil temps were higher than Castrol Edge.
Go figure... so for my engine at least, I'm going to try something else. Micks Motorsports recommends one of the Shell oils for the 4G63, so I will need to find out what it is and give it a try.
