Hey guys,

A friend is currently complying a Mazda RX7 Series 8 Type RZ and i will see it sometime this week. If all is well, a deposit will be placed for the purchase.

Do you guys have any tips as to what i need to be looking out for?

Tried to sign up to AusRotary forums last week and they still havent .. approved? my registration.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers Peter

make sure you check over the engine, the turbos can give trouble on them too.

make sure you can do a cold start on it first thing in the morning after it has been sitting all night.
they can be hard to start once the engine is cold=not a good sign

nice cars but alot more maintenance required over a cylinder engined car.

if the engine does go you are up for $5-6k for a proper rebuild(bare engine) but once done they are pretty good.
I had my old rx7 engine done and it is still going (with the new owner)after 100k but it wasnt a cheap thing to do.

They are certainly a great chassis, and the power delivery is great, but like Dougmo said they can be expensive to play with. If possible I'd be paying for a experienced inspection, hopefully save you from a possible lapse in judgement.

thanks for the help guys..

george, the cars done 70k.. and ive got a mechanic coming with me to have a look at the car when it comes in too.

I have had some expeirence with rotas .......taking a mechanic with you will help in finding some things BUT find a shop over there that does a lot of rotaries and take it for a good going over. The engine is a funny thing.....driven well it lasts and lasts. left to sit for even a few weeks and it will die from loss of compression.

fk yeh pete I love FD's they look so freakin hot!

I think its a definite winner. Even if the engine blows you can leave it in your garage and just look at it. lol!

exactly brian, a low kay one that has been sitting around isnt a good thing for a rotor.
before I replaced the engine in my rx7 if I didnt drive it every day and left it sitting for 2 or more days it wouldnt start
unless I put a tiny bit of oil into the rotor ousings to give it compression.
It would then start and fill the whole street with smoke...HAHA.

As brain also said, not much point taking a mechanic that has no rotor experience. The only place I would get a rotary checked
out is extreme rotaries(rohan ambrose)

haha thats the attitude Alex.

Fuck you boys are scaring me..

ive also been told that with rotors, dont be surprised to wake up one day and the car wont start, REBUILD.

LOL!.. Pete dont believe everything you hear!!.. honestly, treat it well and it will treat you well. Abuse it, and be prepared!

Coming from a guy who has had numerous rotors and a handfull of 93t's/63t's, alot of it comes down to how it was cared for before - regardless of what motor. Till this day, i still havent had a rotary engine cark it on me for no reason. I have had 1 let a corner seal go due to my stupidity and i admit that it was my fault.

Pete do take note of what the other guys are telling you and definitely take someone down for the initial checkup who knows about rotors - id even help you out if you want. For peice of mind, take the car to a well known workshop and get them to do a full check on it. Its well worth the couple of hundred bux in the long run.

Aside from that, FD's are sexy cars and you wont be dissapointed - providing you've done your research and it all checks out well.

Cheers,
Chris

nah scraping the plan alex.

hopefully in one months time, ill be able to create a members ride on 4gtuner. B)

all thomo boys are shifty dean.

olly, they feel very racer though.

wont make it in time unfortunately george. the vehicle i have in mind needs a clutch and a ecu + tune.

which brings me to my next question.. do any of you guys know the difference between these two...

looking at getting the one for the evo 3... would i need the d jetro one?

dejetro means it runs a map sensor soyou can remove the afm.

i think you may need to buy an adaptor loom to run them though.

you should seriously consider ecm link if you need a tune though pete, it does the job fine
